"Why is there a push to make every class budget friendly for the beginning racer? Isn't that why there are limited classes? I would like to see class 5 be a class of race car drivers. Not full of beginning racers with little to no talent or driving skill. Keep it so class 5 requires some experience and talent to race and win in. Not luck. We aren't gambling on slot machines, we are driving purpose built race cars." BY TAPEWORM
There is no such thing as a budget friendly 5 unlimited !! cost way more $$$$ to race it than build it . A 105" car is a hand full at 100mph so I am going to guess that you have never driven or possibly taken a ride in a true 5 unlimited , If you have little to no talent you are going to have a tough road in this class
"I'm currently saving my money to build a race car. I would like to get in a 5 unlimited, not a 5b. I'd rather race against people that followed the rules and didn't create another class because they weren't willing to spend the money "BY TAPEWORM
So build your 5 unlimited and race in 500 , I have a big type 4 I'll sell ya
"Also, when was the last time a top running ecotec team ran a full season with ONLY oil changes to the motor? let alone 2? " BY TAPEWORM
I have with Kevin Ellis Last year , won the championship at SNORE in class10 ,won at plaster city, 2nd at the MINT, 2nd at BAP , with a worst finish of fourth, finished 2nd by 32 seconds and 3rd over all at the MORE Royal Purple 500 , finished every mile of every race , ALL ON THE SAME E-BAY ECOTEC , and It still runs today , did it on E85 and oil changes

I guess what I wrote did't really come across as what I had hoped. Maybe I don't need to race in this class as I don't have enough "talent" to drive a 5 car.
I have been quiet and watching the last few days. I am becoming convinced this engine rules conversation has done more damage, at this point, than good for 5U. Potential 5U racers, myself included, just don't know what to do powerplant wise with a new or refreshed 5U build. With all this engine option chaos, how can a team commit to a new effort in the class? The answer is they cannot.
I have talked to the important tech personality at SNORE. I did not offer my opinions (you guys all know I wanted a sealed VW VR6 to help contain costs). I was told that NO rules change was immediately forth-coming at SNORE for 5U by Bill Shapley. Simple. If this is the case, how will "we" combine the "5B-oddities" at the SNORE/MORE KC Highlights Midnight Race "everyone" wants in SEPT? BTW, I am excited to be able to see Jim V's 5U in September with my own eyes.
Keep plugging along guys, it might still turn out to be something positive...what's to be lost at this point?

There wont be a single watercooled 5u car in september if I had to guess. Why not commit to a type 4? Thats a tried and true option and will outpower a 2.5 liter revving to 7500 rpm's. I'd still say type 4's the best option it will just cost more than a water cooled to run. When I was racing in last years toys for tots I would get reeled in by 5 cars in the big technical potions of the course because of the huge lowend they have but, in the longs straights on my top end I was slightly faster but not much. The type 4 bajas are better than an ecotech baja overall. I experienced this first hand. I would still rather run an ecotec because its a cheap option for the performance, and I'm cheap.
Oh yeah and Chris your car looks really good in that pic. I had some great footage of chris reeling me in at the toys for tots race but unfortunately I cant find it. What size motor is that and what kind of numbers do you get out of it?
Is this 5b thing going to happen? If so thats a shame to split the class. My opinion change on this engine rule in favor of water cooled engines awhile ago but I dont like the idea of two different classes. I will race were the numbers are for now with my air cooled but I would never put a water cooled engine in my car unless it was all one class. I guess its a start to what we all really want or at least most of us(20).
time to go prep.hope I dont have ten pages to go through again when i get home tonight .oh and stare at my car for awhile too she's getting so close to being done .
