warning * we are still in rattle snake mating season out in johnson valley. 3 weeks ago i had a 7 year old male sidewinder roll up against my cooler while bbqing dinner at the vikings mc race by the rockpile. ive seen 5 sidewinders out there over the last 3 years of the 500 race. i have not seen a mojave green rattler since the pro rock days though. last weekend one of our chase guys was testing shocks out off of bessameir road and took a strike to his boot around sunset. just be careful at night stumbling out around camp or behind the trailers.

Very good advice...to add:
If you all have any dogs around camp, I would suggest rattle snake training for them as well. You can Google it if interested.
I've seen numerous rattle snakes in the hills of South Orange County while hiking these past few weeks. I was out jogging and came up on some walkers w/pets the other day....& about the time I met/was passing them, we all saw a rattler on the side of the trail. Two dog owners completely FREAKED OUT while the snake trained dog initiated protocol & avoided the snake w/it's owner calmly. This dog grabbed it's own leash and lead the owner safely passed the snake.
It was cool to witness!

^^ Thanks for that guys, as it's really appreciated! Honestly hadn't even crossed my mind although when we go hiking with our dogs we're always on guard - though we haven't taken them out lately since the foxtails are raging.
@ gotteracing - your chase guys boots, just curious if they were run of the mill style or something more protective with steel toes?

If you want to pick me up at my house and drive me out to the race, that would be a big help. LOL - hope you find a seat Patric.

That's funny cause I've been going to JV all my life and have seen 1, maybe 2 rattle snakes the whole time. While we are on the subject, I've also only seen 1 scorpion (might have been in Barstow) and 1 tortouse. Seen a bunch of gardner snakes though and rabbits, and a few of those weird looking rat things
P.S. How the hell did you know how old the snake was? lmao thanks for the reminder
