F-150 Speedometer Not working???
Hey guys, the speedometer in my 96 F-150 is not working, and I can't figure out why. I replaced the censor on the Rear end housing. I don't believe the guage cluster is bad, the speedometer is the only guage not working. For a while it worked only when it was raining out, which made me think it was a wire, but I could not find any breaks in the wire.
Thanks for any input.

Re: F-150 Speedometer Not working???
Does the odometer work?. Is the speedo digital or electric dial?. I have had to install reman clusters for this problem.
Just toss it in the carbage can.

The odometer is digital, and no it does not work. I presume it runs off the speedometer?

Is the odometer stuck and not counting or blank?. You may want to try a dial sweep test. Key off, hold reset button, key on release reset button. Should sweep speedo 0 to max back to zero. Basically only a stuck needle test.
Also if no check engine light on, the other modules that use the axle sensor are getting the signal.
Im 80% you need a cluster.
Just toss it in the carbage can.

The check engine light is on, but when scanned it had nothing to do with that. The odometer is not blank, it is just not counting. The needle is not stuck, I tried that test. Sounds like I need a cluster??
Did it only working in the rain happen to be coincidental for me?
Thanks for your help.

One more thing, does the cruise control work? if it is equiped. as I recall it gets its signal from the instrument panel or "cluster" as I call it. That proves signal to the panel.
Hopefully some of the folks here that can remember what they know can use the information you have provided to find a better solution than replace the biggest peice of the puzzle.
Just toss it in the carbage can.

My 05' Not So Super Duty sometimes has the same problem, ( Among loads of others. It has been in Ford Dealerships 16 times, in lots of places). I have been able to correct this particular problem by turning off and then re-starting while driving! Sometimes it takes up to two re-starts to correct the problem. Hope this helps.

I did notice when the speedometer would cut out, the engine note would change, and it ran better when it did work. But again, the scanner says nothing about this.

Re: F-150 Speedometer Not working???
If your truck is equipped with ABS the siginal comes from the sensor in the rear end, goes to the 4WABS computer mounted on the driver side engine compartment, then to the PSOM (cluster) which processes the signal and supplies it to the ECM to control shift points and emissions controls on the engine. If your truck is equipped with an E4OD transmission you should not drive it until this problem is corrected as i can result in transmission falure. With a quality scan tool you can examine the siginal from both the OBD2 plug under the glove box or from the 4WABS diagnostic connector near the hood hinge on the drivers side. I assume you have already checked the fuses for all of these systems?
FYI, you can swap just the speedometer head out in a 92-96 cluster, and any year 92-96 will work to test out the speedo. There is some slight differences from year to year on pin outs for indicator lamps (ABS, check engine, ect).

Might be PSOM...that was my problem when my 95 did the same thing.
