After a terrific opening day of our GEICO Dual in the Desert, presented by General Tire, the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, presented by GEICO, was back at it for a second day, as Round 6 of the 2012 championship hit the track at Speedworld Off Road Park in Surprise, Arizona. With temperatures again soaring into the triple digits, drivers and their equipment were pushed to the breaking point and beyond, and through the carnage, several of our series’ most talented drivers stepped proudly to the top of the podium in their respective classes. In one case, one of our biggest names reached a historic pinnacle of success. Wanna find out who? Read on and learn about the big moment, and all the terrific action that unfolded out on the track today.
Pro 2 Unlimited
Pro 2 Unlimited often delivers some of the most thrilling racing of any Lucas Oil Off Road weekend, and today’s race was no exception. Brian Deegan started up front and had the lead early, and was pulling open a gap on his pursuers before the Competition Yellow. Deegan continued to lead in the early part of the second half, but after a full course caution bunched the field back up, Deegan’s truck had developed a mechanical issue, and was slow on the restart. His day then ended when Carl Renezeder lost a wheel on the restart lap, and Deegan had nowhere to go except right into Renezeder’s truck. Marty Hart had taken the lead with a great restart, and following another full course caution to clear Deegan’s and Renezeder’s trucks from the track, Hart shot into the lead on the restart once again. Behind Hart, some very close and fierce racing was happening for second place, with Jeremy McGrath, Greg Adler, Rodrigo Ampudia, Rob MacCachren, and Rob Naughton all getting a piece of the action. Rob MacCachren came on strong in the closing laps, as he often does, and came home best of the rest in his #21 Rockstar/Makita Ford, but up front it was “the Hart attack,” Marty Hart, getting the win in his #15 ReadyLift Off Road Suspension/GearUp2Go.com Ford. Third place went to Adler, who is showing much greater tenacity and consistency in his #10 4 Wheel Parts/BFGoodrich Tires Ford. McGrath had a good showing today, especially considering his spectacular exit from yesterday’s race, and came away with fourth today in his #2 Monster Energy/Toyo Tires Ford. Ampudia got beaten around thoroughly by those around him in the battle behind Hart, but kept his head down and brought his tattered #36 Lucas Oil/Papas & Beer Ford home in fifth.
Pro 4 Unlimited
Kyle LeDuc had some added pressure on him today, as the possibility existed that he could break the all-time series record for most consecutive wins in any class, which coming into today, he co-held with Austin Kimbrell (Unlimited UTV, 2010), Brian Deegan (Pro Lite Unlimited, 2011), and Broc Dickerson (Junior 1 Kart, 2011). With the heat baking the Arizona desert, drivers and equipment were suffering this afternoon, and Kyle gradually worked his way through the carnage to take the lead by lap six, and with his biggest challengers falling by the wayside early, he cruised to a relatively easy win, a bit anti-climatic considering his incredible accomplishment. All the same, LeDuc’s run in the #99 Monster Energy/Toyo Tires Ford this season has been nothing short of remarkable, and everyone else in the class must be wondering when or how they can break his streak. Only two other drivers managed to complete all the allotted 18 laps, with Travis Coyne taking second in the #5 ProComp/Team Associated Ford, and Jerry Daugherty rounding out the podium in his #23 E3 Spark Plugs/Racin Dirty Chevrolet. Greg Adler finished a lap down in fourth in his #10 4 Wheel Parts/BFGoodrich Tires Ford, and fifth place went to Kyle’s dad, Curt LeDuc, in his #43 Zipfizz Healthy Energy/Truxxx Lift and Level Kits Ford.
Pro Lite Unlimited
At just 19 years of age, young RJ Anderson is quickly becoming the dominant force in this season’s Pro Lite Unlimited field. After taking the win in convincing fashion yesterday, Anderson had another stellar run today, but things didn’t start out easy. While battling in the top three on the opening lap, Anderson was nearly spun in turn four, dropping him back to eighth place. The #37 Monster Energy/Walker Evans Racing Dodge driver battled back, though, and was up to fifth by lap three, and then picked off two more drivers on the next lap, moving him into the top three. Following a full course caution, Anderson then moved by the early leader Ryan Beat, who’d just been passed by Austin Kimbrell, and then inherited the lead when Kimbrell rolled in turn four on lap eight. From there, Anderson quickly opened up a good gap in the early part of the second half, and held that gap over second-placed Casey Currie for the balance of the race, cruising home to his fourth victory in six races so far this season. Currie took a solid second place in the #2 Monster Energy/General Tire Nissan, with young class rookie Bradley Morris rounding out the podium in his #24 GoldStar Asphalt!/Lucas Oil Ford. Beat survived some mid-race loss of pace to hang on for fourth in his #51 Premiere Motorsports Group/Black Rhino Ford, and Chris Brandt recovered from an unavoidable mid-race collision with a spun-out driver to take fifth in his #82 BFGoodrich Tires/National Concrete Cutting Toyota.
Super Lite
After a brilliant run in the first four rounds of the season, 14-year-old Sheldon Creed finally had a bad race yesterday, but recovered very well today, taking the win after leading all but the first lap in his #74 BFGoodrich Tires/Trench Shoring truck. Creed opened up a solid lead over Jessie Johnson before the Competition Yellow, and did the same again in the second half, pounding out the laps in dominating fashion on his way to his third win of the season. Second place went to Johnson in the #15 So Cal Super Trucks/Speed Energy machine, who also bounced back after a tough day yesterday, and third place was Ryan Hagy, who picked up podium finishes on both days this weekend in his #5 Valli Construction/Rockstar entry, a first for the southern California driver. Dawson Kirchner picked up fourth in his #18 Method Race Wheels/General Tire truck, and early leader Garrett Poelman recovered from a lap two rollover to take fifth in his #62 Supercross.com/Loctite machine.
Our race weekend now comes to a close, but fear not. We’ll be back at it again in just five weeks’ time, as the series heads north to the spectacularly beautiful Miller Motorsports Park, just outside Salt Lake City in Tooele, Utah. With beautiful mountains surrounding the picturesque green valley in which the track is situated, this is one setting that is not to be missed on our calendar, so get your tickets now for Rounds 7 and 8, June 23-24.

ironically.. Deegan should have never been there when this happened, and this whole accident could have been avoided.
Bummed to see jeremy go out like that. I was able to see jeremy's in-car footage, and it wasn't pretty.. Just glad to see he walked away.

I agree it sucks when any of the drivers crash and tear their equipment up. I'm also glad Jeremy walked away from this incident ok. The one thing ShortCourse guarantees is action packed, drama filled racing.
