Course Reconnaissance Runs Rules and Regulations
HDRA is pleased to offer racers and their crew and families the opportunity to do Baja-style course reconnaissance for several days leading up to the Fireworks 500 on Saturday, July 7th. The following rules and regulations have been established to ensure that everyone participating in these recon runs is able to do so with a maximum of safety while enjoying this unique opportunity that has virtually vanished from the U.S. off-road racing scene. Please observe all stipulations for your safety and the safety of others.
Hours of Operation for Recon Runs
Location: Tahoe-Reno Motorplex (TRM) 420 USA Parkway, McCarran NV – 20 min./20 miles East of Eldorado Resort Hotel off I-80
Saturday, June 30th thru Thursday, July 5th – 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Friday, July 6th – 8:00 am to 12:00 noon Friday, July 6th – 12:00 noon - Course is closed to allow for final prep for Fireworks 500
Requirements for Recon Run Participation
1. Speed limit of 55 mph is in effect at all times. HDRA Staff will be on course every day during the recon run periods doing course marking. No recon vehicle should place any course vehicle or personnel in any danger at any time!
2. This recon running program is not intended for wide open running or suspension and carb jet testing, A separate area is being set aside for this type activity.
3. Course recon laps are for the purpose of making notes, locating pit locations and becoming familiar with the terrain that you will encounter during the race,
4. All persons driving or riding in vehicles travelling on the Fireworks 500 course must be HDRA members. This stipulation is necessary for insurance coverage that allows this recon run activity.
5. Before beginning your first recon run, all persons going on recon runs must register and sign waivers. Wristbands, GPS files and maps will be issued when waivers are signed. HDRA Recon Run Registration Center is located at:
420 USA Parkway Suite 103 - (Take Exit 32 off-ramp from I-80 East of Reno) McCarran Nevada 89434-5612
NOTE: HDRA Membership sign-up will also be available at this location. 6. All persons operating vehicles on Tahoe-Reno Motorsports property must be 16 years of
age or older and be a DMV licensed driver.
7. Drivers/passengers/riders of side-by-sides, motorcycles and quads must wear helmets, eye protection and be fully clothed at all times. No open-toe shoes, slippers, flip-flops or shorts allowed. Seatbelts must be worn at all times in all 4-wheeled vehicles (quads excepted)..
8. Vehicles should depart on recon runs in groups of two (2) or more vehicles. This is commonplace for Baja runs as a measure of safety.
9. IMPORTANT! – There is no stand-by medical staff on-site during recon run days. To avoid incidents, all recon run vehicles should maintain a 300-foot distance from other vehicles for clear vision of the course at all times.
10. DO NOT drive into dust and NO competitive driving at any time. Slow moving vehicles must monitor their mirrors for overtaking vehicles, and move over to let them safely pass.
11. NO VEHICLE shall travel backwards on the course at any time. Course layout is a “clover- leaf” and during a lap you will be within two (2) miles of the Main pit four (4) different times!
12. When stopping, move at least 25-feet off the race line in a safe area. Do not stop on the race line at any time and present a hazard to approaching vehicles.
13. DO NOT stray off course or take alternate routes at any time. Alternate routes can lead you off the TRM property and can be dangerous and possibly result in a citation.
14. Each vehicle must carry ample water for each occupant and a supply of snacks is recommended. It’s a long ways around a 125-mile course!
15. All vehicles must have a cell phone programmed for 9-1-1 and local rescue unit numbers (will be provided). Satellite (SAT) phones and/or tracking devices are also recommended.
16. All vehicles allowed to do course recon must be equipped with a USDF spark arrestor or muffler. No open exhaust or headers are allowed. All vehicles should have a fire extinguisher on board. Do not throw any burning objects from your vehicle. Fire danger is extremely high in many areas!
17. The loop ranges from 4,200 to 6,700 feet in elevation with spectacular views of Tahoe, Reno and Virginia City at the higher elevations. This is the ultimate in recon runs!
18. There is a mile-long section of asphalt road at the end of the run leading you back to USA Parkway. This is a public road and you must obey the posted speed limits on this road during the week of recon runs. The Storey County Sheriff’s units patrol this road for speed limit violations, Please watch your speed!
19. No HDRA member who is participating in course recon runs shall remove, modify, add or delete any course markings at any time.
Take this unique opportunity to enjoy the adventure and the scenery... And please do so in a safe manner!

Re: HDRA Set to Redefine Desert Racing - Eldorado Fireworks 500
what happen to the 24 hour prerunning? Its not even going into sunset, I was really hoping to get a lil dusk practice and adjust my lights. Is this info still going through changes?
Also do you know if the 1400 class will get full laps this race. I think it would be very much appreciated and result in a huge turnout especially with how far we have to drive. I cannot wait to enjoy this vacation.

Recon Running begins at 8:00 am each day and we've established 4:00 pm as the deadline to start a recon run. We need to get everyone off the course and back before dark. Be certain you read and thoroughly comprehend the regulations before starting to do recon running. It's a huge area and the regulations and run times have been established for your safety and enjoyment. Run SAFE!

Hey Keith, with all due respect. You really should try calling or emailing questions instaed of always posting on a public forum the way you do. Your post seem to come off a little agresive at times. You are getting a lot of tv time and are very new to the sport, which is great! Just asking maybe you can PM me or call me, I am your class rep. Good Luck and see you in Reno!

I see nothing wrong with him posting as a reply to other posts on the subject.
It might even help out as I am sure some others had the same questions since the recon run rules are slightly different than what was rumored before.
