Engine smog guestion
I have a 01 chevy silverado and it has all the smog stuff like the egr valve and other crap... And my brother has a 05 avalanche and it has nothing as far as smog stuff...not even a egr valve.. So my guestlsion is if I put a newer chevy 5.3 would I have to put all the smog stuff back or does it depend on the year of the engine? Please help thanks.

It depends on the year of vehicle and what region of the us. it was built for. CA. built cars have the most smog Bs. newer vehicles with variable valve timing dont have egr. they accomplish the same concept by changing the valve overlap. Either way you would have to see the ref. so good luck!

Re: Engine smog guestion
in ca. you have to put everything from the new motor in your vehicle. all your old stuff will not pass the state ref. when i say everything, i mean everything from the air evap system to air intake. the ref wants to be able to smog it as if it was the year of the motor.

Re: Engine smog guestion
Thanks for replies.. That sucks. I wanted to put a 07 chevy 5.3 but I noticed that it doesnt have all the smog stuff that my truck has. Thats why I asked the question. So if I wanted to put that motor in my truck I would still have to apply all the smog stuff too. Thats crap. I dont remember voting on that.

It's California. You don't get to vote on this topic. Find a ref in your area, shouldn't be hard in OC, and ask them. You could be surprised with the answer/info you receive. Most are very receptive to inquiries, and will steer you in the right direction. Don't leave out any details. Good luck, and keep us posted.
