Re: 2008 ford f250 diesel mpg??

I have an 08, and have been to the dealer numerous times about the fuel mileage and the frequency that the PM trap burns. When I leave the dealer it says i'm getting 14mpg, but within a month i'm back to 8 to 9. I have also had a few cases where the PM trap was burning and in stop and go traffic or stopping at a light I will get fumes coming into the cab and to the point of almost getting sick from it. It was a poor design since it pulls raw fuel from your tank to do it's burn cycle.

I too have an '08. The mileage on the dash may not represent your actual mileage. I also have 35's on 20's and my speedo is off by 10%. My truck is 4x4 with a 9' service body. The truck weighs over 10,000 pounds.

If your mileage is showing in the 9's it is being brought down by city driving, which is where these trucks are extremely bad. I recently reset my mileage on the way back from Temecula and with driving at 60-65 and staying out of the throttle I got 16.5 for the 80 mile trip. I get about 11-12 miles towing. I suggest doing a hand calculation to get the honest reading. You will need to pump the fuel until you can see it in the fuel neck to get a true sense of the quantity. It takes a lot of time to let the foam settle. It will take between 5-6 gallons after the pump shuts off...

I have had my truck up to Drew Ford to check the DPF and it was "within spec". It was regen'ing constantly. I suspected that the DPF was constricted. While in re-gen the injectors were very loud. The re-gen process took a long time and would repeat within a realiive short time.

I took the DPF off and had Action Turbo clean it. It is much better now. It does a passive re-gen about every 75 miles but I have nearly 400 miles on it since it was cleaned and the active re-gen cycle hasn't been initiated yet.

The big thing about these trucks is that they don't like to idle and they don't like city driving. I have a short drive and do mostly city driving.

I personally am going to stay away from the DFP delete kit. It this state it may become a capital offense to remove the emissions equipment...

When the truck goes into re-gen the injectors fire an extra squirt of fuel on the exhaust stroke. That fuel goes into the converter and is burns, turning the soot into ash that is kept in the filter. My filter was pretty plugged. My truck has 70,000 miles and is still under warrantee, but I chose to deal with the problem. I think that the filter should be removed and cleaned once a year for the best results. I have 7.3 that is also stock. My '08 is a much better truck for pulling my prerunner and the race truck... There is comparison. These truck with the DPF are just a bit finicky.

If you are interested in getting the filter cleaned there is a few things to keep in mind. Let me know if you are interested...

My truck is still under warrantee and only has 22,000 miles on it. I would not of thought the trap would be plugged up already, but it makes sense. The agency I work for has a large truck and equipment fleet and they burn the traps yearly, but have far more hours and miles on them. They did buy their own machine for burning the traps, but I am interested in any tips and tricks you have to make my life easier. Thanks

Re: 2008 ford f250 diesel mpg??

I bought my truck used with 64k on it. It was a fleet truck from Las Vegas, so I'm pretty sure that it got lots of idle time. I took the truck up to the local ford dealer and they told me that it had an "open campaign" on the programming for the re-gen controller. After I got it back it has gone into passive re-gen more frequently.

I wouldn't think that with 22k on your truck that it would be plugged, it just seems that driving conditions play the major role in the DPF. If you had 22k miles towing then I could see the soot being collected in the DPF faster.

If you do burn it, I learned a couple of things. First, knock the studs out before you drop the DPF out. It'll be easier to remove plus when mine was burnt the studs annealed and three of them galled up when I reinstalled it. Sencondly, be very carful with the exhaust pressure sensor. They are plastic and get brittle from the heat. I has to replace mine. Lastly, the burn is only half of the process. It needs to be "puffed" and blown out vigorously.

    Good luck!!

Thanks for the info. My truck is used mainly for towing. I usually tow from 14,000 to 18,000 with it. My problems started when they had the recall for it to regen while driving instead of it being in park. It would start it's cycle at every hill I started to climb and would cycle for up to 45 minutes. I made a trip to Reno empty and it cycled 8 times. After raising hell with Ford, it does'nt cycle as often. They have already had to replace the exhaust manifold gaskets.

Re: 2008 ford f250 diesel mpg??

Of course regular maintenance on your filters is necessary on any diesel engine and a clogged air filter will have a huge impact on mileage. The 6.4 liter Ford truck are notorious for their poor mpg performance, especially in stock trim and tune. I have seen owners go from 12 mpg average to nearly 20 mpg with just a tuner. DPF deletes are illegal and could cause you big problems especially in CA!!! But you can use a tuner on the truck. Check out H&S, SCT, Banks, Edge and so on...

I really worry about the longevity of these engines with the "overfuel" method of regeneration. It can cause fuel dilution in the oil and will no doubt shorten the engine life. The new GM LML trucks use a separate fuel injector for the DPF that will not wash out the oil. A much better design if you ask me.

Re: 2008 ford f250 diesel mpg??

    I've got an 08'.
    New in Oct. 07'.
Mines a CCSB FX4 bone stock except for the 75PSI Goodyears.

At 29,000 ish miles, a DPF sensor went south, leaving me stranded.
It was repaired under warranty. Parts were in stock, but they had never seen this failure. Hmmmmmm, OK.
Upon repair, the dealer left the exhaust "a little loose" when they reassembled everything, it clanked and rattled for a few thousand miles until i made time to check it out.
In those few thousand miles, it would burn approx every 80 miles!! (80)
After reassembling the exhaust, it went back to burning approx. every 240 ish. Ahh, much better.
The joint between the DPF and the muffler was not fully seated or tightened. Maybe a connection??

I generally drive like a grandpa, although I have purposely driven it hard for a tank or 2 just to see the difference. Not much.
During mixed driving, it has never done better than 12.5 average tank, hand calced.
I have occasionally hit the reset button at different times to see what the comp thinks is going on.
During a burn, the comp says its getting 8.5 to 9 mpg (thats on the freeway at 65)
After a burn It says 16.5 to 17.5 in the same driving conditions.
Can the DPF really be using 2+ MPG, AVERAGE!?

Towing my 10,000 lb trailer/race truck it gets 9.5 avg. here to Vegas and back. Not unreasonable.

Then, at 92K, towing home from Parker, the HPFP crapped out, leaving me stranded again, IN INDIO,,,,, ON SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!
Remember the Chevy/Apocalypse commercial? I watched that one on the Motel TV much to the delight of my friends and family who, of course, had to call and razz me when they saw it.
    I am Dave.

It was repaired under warranty, (If you haven't had the pleasure, the repair is a cab off, 2 day'er) but that didn't cover the 700+ mile round trip for the backup tow rig, the time off work for 2 peeps, or the plane flight to go retrieve the repaired truck.
Cost of doing biz I guess.

Now, at 98,000K, the trans is slipping,,,, Awesome!

I do like my truck, my 4th new Ford truck consecutively.
I don't really have a problem with the mileage, heck its an 8200 lb beast!

But, the DPF IS a turd.
And I am disappointed in the reliability.

    Think Cliff reads RDC?

    FYI; Wife's got a 10' Edge. Kids got 06 F150. Race trucks a Ford.
    All Ford, all the time.
