Re: mechanical gauges or electrical?
Oh, and don't get me started on speed hut, I have done two installations with speed hut. A whole lot of wiring to make them work. They have two different lights inside of them, one that is DC and one that is AC. They have a little inverter that supply's AC voltage to the gauge back light. The DC supply's power to the lighted needle, The AC side has a little black box that daisy chains between all the gauges and then gets pos. and neg. from lighting circuit. The only thing I can say that I like about them, is that you can have the face of the gauge printed to say anything you want. You could get the part number printed on the front, so that when you have to replace them, you don't have to take the dash out to get the part number. I truly hate them the most. Sorry

Well we'll see. I'm kinda out of space on the dash so combining gauges seems like a good idea. I gotta figure that even with more complicated wiring, only having to wire up 2 gauges can't hurt.
g king, what broke on the ones you had to send back?

On the speed hut gauges, I don't know what was wrong with them, just that we had an oil temp and a pressure gauge not working

Well hopefully I have some better luck. I did a lot of searching on the net trying to find folks complaining about these things not working or about the quality and only found one or two guys who had a problem and even they had good customer service getting them replaced. At least they have a nice warranty in case something isn't right or doesn't last off road. I like that they're made in America too (happy 4th everybody!).

Re: mechanical gauges or electrical?
Just a quick update as I was finally able to get the Humongous in the dirt for a good test of my Speedhut gauges.
They worked flawlessly and are very easy to read and look bitchin. As for the wiring, the harness that goes to the senders is solid, with metripack connectors at the sender rather than just a single wire with an eyelet connector like on most senders. The wiring for gauge power and lighting was very small gauge however so I took care to bundle it all together and strain relieve it. Other than that it worked fine.
The GPS speedo acquired satellites very quickly and has some nice functions such as trip odometer, compass heading, 0-60 and 1/4 mile time, etc. It was rock solid the whole trip to Baja and no hiccups with signal even though I just have the antenna on the dash. The only issue with that gauge is that some of the settings require a constant power hookup or it will dump your setting, however it is such low power draw that it would take forever to drain your battery. I didn't have the constant power hooked up but I plan to do that shortly, and I'll just disconnect the battery when the truck won't be used for long periods.
I'll post some pics shortly.

Re: mechanical gauges or electrical?
Zambo,
Rather than disconnect the battery, an option would be to use a battery maintainer. The current draw from the gauge memory is probably only a few mil-amps if that. The battery tender will easily accommodate this while preserving your battery at the same time.
Note: Be sure to purchase a maintainer designed for your specific battery type (ie: Lead Acid, AGM, Gell-Cell, etc.) The wrong maintainer may cause irreparable damage your battery.

Re: mechanical gauges or electrical?
Here's the speedhut gauges in my truck in case anybody was wondering about these things. So far so good. The set was just under $600 and includes all senders, gps antenna for the speedo, and everything. Really impressed with the ability to cusomize the warning lights on each gauge, adjust the brightness of everything and they look awesome at night. No vibrating/bouncing pointers either.
