Class 9 vs. 5/1600 Challenge for 2013???

I guess I will chime in on this, if you look at lap times from BAP a class 9 car has kicked butt. Yeah class 9 have beat 5/1600 in Barstow/Lucerne many times but sorry to say, if all this $$$$ is up for grabs you will attract Ledezma, Negrete, Savedra, Rulo, Hendrickson (when he gets the bugs worked out) and they will steal all of it. I love competition and it would be fun, but just to be in the top 5 with a 9 car would be a feat. One of the main reasons class 9s have beat the 5/1600s is because there are so few who run regularly. I am a class 9 buggy dork so don't hate me for saying this as it is only my opinion.

I gotta agree with Dave on this one. In the old days, when Challenger started, I was all for racing these guys together. I followed all the SCORE race stuff (I couldn't afford to run SCORE, so it was Fud and La Rana for me) and was so happy when a 9 car finally took a spot faster than a 5-1600. Times have changed, 5-1600s have changed, and it wouldn't be close. I have always wanted to put on a race for the limited classes (yeah, after I win the Lotto) that would include purse money for these classes- 9, 5-1600, 11, 7s, stock full/mini. Overall winner money, etc... It would be very cool. But 5-1600 cars have gone leaps and bounds past where they were on the same footing as a 9 car. And Dave knows what he is talking about. Despite all his rhetoric and support of baja bugs, he has driven 9 cars in major races. He just doesn't like to talk about the tortoise burrow incident. Those were the days. And who was the guy who killed class 5-1600 with his yellow car a few years ago in MDR and made everyone quit racing 5-1600? That car was as super funded and built as could be and would slaughter a 9 car today.

Still draw both classes together for start position, each class races for separate purse through sanctioning body but everyone races for same side bet. If side bet were $100 and there were 50 entries it could still be substantial. I think it should be distributed to top 10 overall along with a plaque or at least a certificate commemorating the event. This could be a great payday along with fun competition for both classes!!!!!

With the above percentages even 9th and 10th get their $ back from the side bet with 50 entries and the winner would get $1500 on top of their class purse. I really think this would be fun and hopefully inspire some big #s

i like the idea and yes niners have beaten 5-1600 in the past but like bud said with guys like savedra ledezma and negrete 9 doesnt stand a chance in open desert im not even close to the fastest niner out there but i have tried to run with savedra before and you just cant do it.

Look at the lap times from the freedom 250, 25 fast 9 cars and two 5/1600's just happened to go way faster than all of us???? end of story.

This sounds like a great idea... too bad class 9 would lose. We have beaten 5/16's before, but with money and bragging rights up for grabs... class 9 wouldn't stand a chance to the bigger 5/16 teams. Just my .02 cents
