The 3.5l version makes about 285hp and is more common. Techincally, the Ecoboost 3.5 is an awd application. It isn't available in FWD-only, but it is mounted the same as the FWD non-EB V6s.
So it is mounted transverse or longitudinal? I like the Nissan VQ series.

Never heard of this one. More details please. Years, model, etc.

The SHO ecoboost is a transverse mount. It has some kind of PTO to send power to the rear wheels when needed.

Didn't the Taurus SHO have a Yamaha V8? Is it the same engine?

It's not the same engine as the sho, built exclusivly for Volvo came in the xc90 suv. 2005-2008 and the 2007-2008 s80 sedan. Compact little package DOHC. Has potential in an offroad car.

I imagine there is no aftermarket support for that engine. Does it use a Volvo auto transaxle? What would be the best choice for ECU? Megasquirt?

Yes uses a volvo transaxle (Aisin Warner) the problem I see is the ECM controls the engine and trans through CAN comunication to a TCM mounted on top of the trans. Aftermarket support is probably close to none. If you could find someone to build a stand alone ECU for the engine and bolt it to a trans that is not dependent on electronic control it would be a pretty cool set up. The volvo trans axles are junk anyway.

Mitsubishi lancer Evo. east west all wheel drive, lock the center diff and remove the rear drive.
tons of aftermarket support - even dog gearsets for the gearbox. Small highly strung engine but if you have a driver that can keep it on the boil it's also very light.
However they have a terrible turning circle due to the strength of front CVs required.

Isn't it also used in some super car? It seems like Jeremy was making fun of one of the other guys on Top Gear for bringing something powered by an XC90 motor to a competition and the defense was that it was made by Yamaha.

Found it:
The Noble M600 is powered by the same engine.

I was thinking of using something like this, lots of support for the engine and massive amounts of power available.

Youd be surprised what euro tuners use and do, not just the main stream American/Australian cars like the GOLF but the Merc G wagon and some of the lower level saloons.
