1980 Riverside. JD Brand race. I was 22 years old, there were over 100,000 in attendance, and 33 class 8s lined up for the Land Rush Start.
I was driving a garage built Chevy, 12 Rough Country shocks, 5 BFG tires, and a borrowed engine.
"Hot Rod City" was a local speed shop that I hung out at after work. They lent me a SBC from the shop.
First time I've looked at this photo in a long time, and just noticed the JD Brand sticker on the a-pillar.
The caved in rear bedside (which was steel in those days) was damaged in the Friday practice,
I'm thinking I spent 3 months building this truck from street legal, to
Riverside.

Things have changed in class 8 over the years.
I was there, the JD Brand stickers were required if I remember rite. I still have 2 of those
I was at the race as well, just 18 years old, but had a blast. I remember going to the JD Brand area in the garages and asking quite a few questions that the mechanics did not give me any real answers for....years later I learned that there was some questionable financial backing to the team...and which would explain their hesitancy to answer questions.....
I also remember a couple of the trucks warming up by doing some acceleration tests adjacent to the garages....it is all a blurr now. Getting old!

Questionable financial backing??? How about copious amounts of DRUGS!! I herd everything was taken by the Gov, cant say forsure but that is what was going around at the time.
