    Re: Inyo County under attack

I have a plated bike and I ride more closed trails then open ones. What the blm has done in big bear area is a shame. By the time my son will be able to ride, there will be nothing left, just some lame fire roads. Sorry I just wanted to speak my mind. Also PCT is a great trail for motorcycle and mountain bikes, they should open that for everyone, heck I even buy a monthly pass to enjoy it. Some of the best sections are in the big bear area and Acton/ agua dulce side.

"The Pacific Crest Trail extends 2600 miles from Canada to Mexico. Although a few marathon hikers have gone the length in one trip, most take the trail in segments over a period of years. The PCT enters the San Bernardino National Forest in its southern end in the Santa Rosa Mountains. It exits in the northwest part of the forest at Boundary Ridge near Wrightwood.

The trail is for horse and foot traffic only; all motorized vehicles and bicycles are prohibited."

"Closed Areas: Within sites designated as Closes Areas, motorized vehicle use is prohibited. Some of these areas include:

    All Designated Wilderness Areas
    Desert Tortoise Natural Area
    Pacific Crest Trail"

" The use of motorized vehicles by the general public along any national scenic trail shall be prohibited and nothing in this Act shall be construed as authorizing the use of motorized vehicles within the natural and historical areas of the national park system"

oh I see your point. since YOU ride your plated bike off of legal trails, it should be OK for riders of green sticker vehicles to have the same opportunity...

can you see the reason for the suit?

    Inyo said-

"I think that statement could be argued. street legal vechicles have lic plates and insurance. They are less likely to be driven off of legal routes."

And again, You are making the assumption that they will be ridden illegally off of existing trails and roads. I say if there are more legal trails and roads, they will stay on them. The fact is, neither of us can state either of our opinions as fact, but my statement about the damage being done to existing roads by either a street legal or OHV vehicle is a fact. It has nothing to do with leaving the legal to travel route, and that is where your argument falls on it's face again.

    Re: Inyo County under attack

The suit is there solely because people like you want to end OHV recreation on public land. Nothing more, nothing less. While I do not support illegal riding off trails, I can also say with personal experience that the USFS has decimated the old OHV routes in the San Bernardino. One of my favorite routes that used to be legal (Jacoby Canyon) has not only lost it's OHV route status, it has been removed from the forest maps and is no longer listed as a route for street legal vehicle to travel. For no reason given, the USFS just gated and signed closed the forest route that is designated on all forest maps as open to street legal vehicles that passes through my neighborhood and was used by many locals for fire wood gathering. They have diced and sliced the previous OHV routes that used to connect together and made them little 3-5 mile long routes open to OHVs while declaring the sections that connect them together open to street legal vehicles only. All the while they have been asking for more and more OHV funds from the State while reducing OHV opportunities across the board. The analogy is just like this- When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. We are seeing this with OHV routes right now.

In the old days the whole desert was open to riding. As the sport flourished and the population grew, the impacts became unacceptable and some areas were closed--all with due process and public meetings.

Who has been asking for OHV funds? BLM, Police and OHV orgs. you want to not spend this money? granted, some is earmarked for enforcement and some for restoration--THAT IS WHAT THE FUND WAS SET UP TO PAY FOR along with buying land.

As far as buying land---nobody wans an OHV park near them or their favorite camping spot because RIDERS DON'T OBEY RULES. Wherever there is an OHV park, that's where riders stage and then ride out of the park...read LaMonte's post above for an example.

don't forget that the impacts from just a few vehicles can ruin an area for decades. How we gonna solve this problem? by allowing MORE green sticker vehicles to access natural areas? riders who KNOW they can't be identified?

    LEVELS OF UNAUTHORIZED VEHICLE USE
BLM instructions governing OHV activities are not being heeded. As a result, significant degradation of tortoise habitat is occurring. Unauthorized use is astoundingly high.
    http://www.tortoise-tracks.org/publi...s/offroad.html

Desert Ecosystems - Naturally sparse in vegetation, deserts are highly sensitive to roads and off-road vehicle use. At the same time, the visually open terrain draws enormous off-road vehicle use in deserts.

    · Off-road vehicles destroy the living soil crust upon which plants depend for stability and fertility—making growth virtually impossible. The crust can take several hundred years to recover (Belnap 2003).

    · Almost all of the 24 species listed as endangered or threatened in the California Desert Conservation Area—including the desert tortoise, bighorn sheep, desert pupfish, Inyo California towhee, and arroyo toads—are threatened by off-road vehicle use and roads (www.biologicaldiversity.org).

    · Off-road vehicle use negatively affect wildlife including collapsing fringe-toed lizard burrows (Stebbins 1974), reducing habitat of tortoises (Bury and Luckenbach 2002), and increasing susceptibility of mortality of flat-tailed lizards from vehicle collisions (Nicola and Lovich 2000).
