    Tracking devices

    What do you use?

I currently use the original Spot tracker and was thinking about upgrading to the Spot connect.

What are your thoughts on each of these devices?

    Re: Tracking devices

To track a vehicle race or fun I'd prefer the original SPOT over the connect. The connect requires a smart phone for some of its functions that the original Spot can do by simple pressing buttons on the unit.

    I have used both.

If you are in no rush and like to nerd out while in the wilderness then the connect is nice to have to send detailed sms type messages but to simply track a bike or car its too much or maybe even too complicated.

    Re: Tracking devices

I have both and like the original SPOT the best for tracking and checking in. The connect is great to get a more detailed message sent but for my weekly rides I choose the original over the connect because of the one button simplicity Klaus mentioned. My old SPOT worked great while we broke pre running the point to point a couple of years ago. My wife was able to track me on the bike (in tow) and communicate with the chase truck that also had a spot and guide them right to me......all from 1000 miles away. The connect would have been handy then to let them know exactly what had happened and where, it was an 8 hour ordeal. If your cell phone is dead, the connect is useless.

That's a common problem with the Connect.

That's all good until you get out of radio range.

The connect sounds like a very good idea. Sometimes we know the car has stopped moving by the spot tracking but we have no radio contact. We pack what we think we need and head that direction. It would be very nice to be able to send out a detailed message so we knew what the problem was so we could get the most qualified people/chase truck for the particular problem at hand to the race vehicle
