Newbie lookin for tips
Hello everyone I'm from Texas and a few friends and I are pondering getting into baja. We've all been into rock climbing for a bit but it's to damn slow. We have a f150 we wana build up if we decide to do this. But before we start chucking money into this we would like to try a couple a couple of trails. Does anyone know anywhere in Texas we could go for a weekend and speed around on some trails? Also any tips or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Z

First off let me say Thank You Cool Z-107 for playing all of todays hits and yesterdays favorites. Second before you start cutting anything up or spending LARGE amounts of money attend SEVERAL events. Ask a lot of questions and look at all of your options. In many cases it's cheaper to buy a built truck then it is for a first timer to build their own.

we dont advise speeding on trails. go out to open desert until you hone you driving skills. then hit the trails. last thing you want to do is hit somebody on a crowded trail. all the racers here will post up great tips. you will be on your way to the finish in no time.

Re: Newbie lookin for tips
Welcome to the addiction,
Not sure if you are talking A-arm or I-beam f-150 but Billy at 4 Wheel Specialties in Corpus caged up the A-arm version and has won the SCORE Stock Full Class last year and looks to be in command this year. Great competition last year but unfortunately the Lexus is having issues this year so no wheel to wheel racing so far.
The truck belongs to Wes Bevly and I think has only timed out in the 250 a few years ago but has been solid since. I'm not sure how close you are but they have done it recently and might have some tips. I think I saw a built one in the classifieds for 30k and appears appears proven.
Good Luck!!

Re: Newbie lookin for tips
Like mentioned above, there are two to three racing organizations in Texas depending on the day.
EDR - Extreme Desert Racing
Baja Racing Texas
Desert Rivals El Paso
There are several Dallas/Ft. Worth racers you might get in contact with to see what it's all about. No real trails to go fast on, all racing in Texas is done on private land with the landowners permission. I'm in Sherman just north of you but our two cars live out in Odessa.
Spend some time on this site for the best info.
This may be a little dated with all of the class changes going on, but it'll get ya started.

Best suggestion is to find a sugar daddy!!

The BRT Cycle Ranch Fun Run is September 1-3. Race-dezert classifieds are a great place to look, there was a clean looking class 8 truck in there from Texas. I bought my truck through RDC. Micheal's suggestion isn't exactly accurate, one sugar daddy isnt enough, you also need a sugar momma and some mechanically inclined friends!

Re: Newbie lookin for tips
Getting out more in the desert of Texas & New Mexico I saw lots of washes up to the interstate. So I would bet if you want to prerun & test in desert conditions you can minimum 7hrs East of you. Mostly around El Paso

the problem with that is most, if not all, land is private in TX. It ain't like Imperial County where you can turn off the pavement and just drive. That fact slapped me in the face when I moved here.

Re: Newbie lookin for tips
I'm originally from Texas & know this all to true for everything East of Odessa to Lousiana. But, out towards El Paso (East) I see tons of washes with tracks in them & no fences every time I drive that way. So, I'm sure there is a few areas (especially washes) that the local guys run.
