How long till all the 2.4's disappear? A lot of classes are specifically set on that exact motor. Maybe it's time to open up the rules to stock, sealed 2.4 or smaller engines, not just the Ecotec.

Not anytime soon! No reason to start panicking everyone Pat! They are still making the 2.4L today! and probably will keep making it available as a crate engine for years to come if you wish to go that route.
The problem I see with opening it up to other mfg is keeping the class even. The whole point is to have one engine that puts out comparable power as others in the class. If you open it up everyone will want the latest and greatest motor from "X" car company and the engines will no longer be closely equal. I already see the engine "bickering" going on in class 10 with that Honda motor that puts out like 240 HP. Defeats the whole purpose of having a sealed spec engine class IMO.
Never mind the teching and sealing of 10 or more different engine configurations that people could potentially pick from if the rules were opened up to other 2.4 L motors

That new Ecotec 2.5 with headers, ecu, etc. will probably put out the same as that Honda. Not sure how it works when they discontinue a motor. Probably safe for a couple of years.

How many million years ago did they discontinue the air cooled VW engine?! Yet there is still, what, five classes that still use them? With several million Ecotecs already out there I think it's a little ways off before we have to worry about obsolescence.
