Mike Oberg PRO-2WD - TORC Spring Crandon Race Report
Oberg Motorsports Spring Crandon Race Report
Eagle River, WI (June 21, 2012) - After two weekends of the 2012 Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL, Oberg Motorsports has shown his competition that the AMSOIL General Tire Chevy is fast and can be a podium contender during every race. Unfortunately the quickness of the driver and truck has yet to pay dividends for Mike Oberg.
The weekend began with Friday afternoon practice and the qualifying session for Saturday's starting position. Mike Oberg and his team have the General Tires really working well with the King Shock suspension package. The black #80 Chevy qualified third fastest in the eleven truck field. His lap time of 1:22.489 around the 1.75 mile track was just .6 seconds of the quick lap time of the PRO-2WD session.
Unfortunately, Saturday's Round 5 action never took place as afternoon heavy rains swept through the Crandon area leaving the race track unfit for competition. The Round 5 PRO-2WD race will be run on the Friday afternoon of the Labor Day weekend Crandon event.
Sunday saw the weatherman cooperate and a beautiful day of racing took place. All eleven PRO-2WD trucks found their spot on the landrush starting grid. When the green flag was waved the field sprinted towards Turn ONE. Before the pack of two-wheel drive trucks could make it to Turn TWO the race was halted. Andy Zipperer and Steve Barlow had come together in Turn ONE sending Barlow through the outside guardrail as Zipperer was shot skyward over Barlow. Both drivers walked away unhurt from the incident. In fact during the delay to repair the damaged guard rail Barlow's team was able to prep the team's back-up truck to make the restart.
The PRO-2WD race saw two more restarts, one after Nick Tyree and Keith Steele came together and one for
the mandatory caution lap. Through all the stopping and starting, the #80 AMSOIL General Tire stayed out of trouble and finished in sixth place.
Now the team went to work prepping the truck for the big money heavy metal challenge known as the Chairman's Cup. The ten lap all out sprint race saw Mike Oberg finishing third among the PRO-2WD racers and sixth overall in the fourteen truck field.
"Again we showed our speed," commented Mike Oberg. "The added moisture in the track from all the rain, messed with our chassis setup for the points race. After all the restarts and the delays, the truck came out of the race is good shape. Matt, Corey, and Brian made a few adjustments for the Cup race and the truck really came alive. The PRO-4 guys got around everybody but Rob. Congrats to Rob MacCachern for winning the Chairman's Cup."
The weekend also saw the Sportsman Super Truck debut of fifteen year old Spencer Oberg, Mike's son, behind the wheel of the team's back-up truck. The high school student handled the six hundred fifty horsepower truck quite well, finishing on the podium in third place.
The next race for Oberg Motorsports is July 19-20 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois.
If you can't make it in person you can watch Round 7 action live on SPEED, and the following night the XSAN crew will webcast all the live racing action as well.
