    quad tire choice

some one help me with ideas and choice options. i have a honda 300 ex and a 400 ex we have started playing in the desert and i see the need to have all the tires the same size! on the rear of the 300 the stock honda size is 22x10-9 the 400 rear is 20x10-9. should i drop the 300 tire size down or raise the 400 up ? and whats a good tire choice for the nevada desert sand rock gravel ect....... we mostly play and chase a buggy! i have historically been going to the dealer and buying honda replacment......... any ideas....or personalle experiance with a good tire??? thanks
Q"s if i lower the rear tire size on the 300 what does that do?, do i then change sproket ?

Most of the time you want to go up in tire size. This gives you more ground clearance and bigger tires make holes smaller. Most desert guys run 23 front with 22 rears. I have always had luck with hole shot xct's. Brand is mostly personal preference. Hope that helps. About sprockets, what area and terrain is your riding?

    Re: quad tire choice

I'd run 22" tall Maxxis Razr II's. I have tried lots of different brands and like these the best. They will likely make the quad feel doggy due to the increase weight and diameter. You can combat that problem by going down a tooth on the front sprocket. I can't believe the 300 has 22" stock, that seems crazy. I wouldn't go any bigger than 22" on the 300 that is for sure.

Take a look at GBX X-Rex tires also. You can get 6-ply 23" Front / 22" Rear for about half the cost of Maxxis Razr II's. They are a decent tire with aggressive tread pattern but would have to agree with Trent that the Razr II's are the best (IMO)

    Re: quad tire choice

Like others have said, I would go with 22" rears for extra clearance on the 400. I also like the GBC X-Rex. Only have a few rides on them so far, but so far they are just as good as the razr2 for quite a bit less money. (I am sick of paying the price for Maxxis) That being said, I would probably go with a lighter tire for the rear of both your quads, either the regular razr or the XCT mentioned above. The razr2/X-rex's are pretty heavy and if the motors are stock on your quads, you will have a hard time pulling high gear. Rider weight has alot to do with that also. I have a little (ok, alot) of extra weight on me, and my 450R with minor engine mods didn't like pulling razr2's in the higher gears. For just play riding, the 300ex you shouldn't need a gearing change, but the 400ex I would go down one tooth on the front sprocket for the taller tires.

    Re: quad tire choice

Doug, I think the itp holeshot XCT is the heaviest tire I have ever tried. I just weighed my bare 22" XCT the other day and it was 19.65 pounds! I didn't have a razr II to weigh but I don't remember the razr being that heavy. Updated the weigh in page with the info: http://kendallrace.com/tech/ATV%20weigh%20in.php

You can always count on Trent to be the one to go that extra mile, still want to see the weight on the Maxis tire brother.

We run like Doug, ITP XCT 23 front and 22x10 rear on our Raptor 700. As also stated you need to look at gearing both front and rear depending on rider weight. I think the point should be what you are going to do on the tires. If you are going to be racing or just going out trail riding? My son has Honda 400 with stock tires and other then a few plugs, no noticable difference. Race tires are great for what they are but they can be more money and will be replaced more often.

    Just my opinion.

Wow, I haven't ran XCT's since 2007, but I don't remember them being that heavy! I know the difference between the razr and razr2 is quite noticeble when I pick them up, even more so when they are on the quad. You can for sure feel the extra rotating mass of a razr2 when reving the engine. I have both tires mounted on the same brand rims out in my shed, I will try to get a weight on both over the weekend.

    Re: quad tire choice

The razr II's could be just as heavy but when we were doing the tire mount last week I just really noticed how heavy the XCT's were but it has been a while since I have mounted any fresh razr II's.
The razr II's will be quite a bit heavier than the I's since the II's are 6 ply and the I's are only 2 ply I believe. Let us know what you find out.
