How to intentionally pop a bead off a wheel?
I've done the same thing over and over and never had an issue but I guess this time is different. I've always had Champion beadlocks on american racing wheels and all sorts of various DOT tires on them. I've always dismounted and mounted them myself. To pop the inside bead loose though I've always been able to use my highlift jack with the foot right on the bead of the tire just barely missing the lip of the wheel and I jack up either my jeep or my toyota or whatever. Well, I'm trying to bust a set of BFG ribbed sidewall projects off a set of KMC beadlocks and I just had the whole front end of my toyota off the ground sitting on the lip of the tire and it's didn't budge. The tire deformed and pushed down maybe 3/8" from the lip of the wheel but wouldn't actually let loose. I don't have a tire machine. I just have a general run of ordinary garage equipment. Any other tricks using common tools short of taking a pair at a time down to the tire shop to have them popped loose? With the weight of the vehicle on it I tried getting a wrecking bar/pry bar in there and give it a bit more motivation but it still didn't want to come loose.
Once I get the inner popped loose it's typically easy just pulling the outter ring off and prying the old off and new on...
Thanks,
Khris

Some tire pliers or levers should help; otherwise a healthy dose of perserverance, a metal rod, a heavier vehicle and/or a second vehicle, lubrication etc. may also be needed.
A video:
If you end up having to go to a tire shop, you'll probably have more luck with a place that does tires for 18 wheelers or a heavy equipment place than a standard high street tire shop.

I had the front corner of my powerstroke 4x4 crewcab on the bead of a project and it still would not pop the bead. Gave up and took them to the tire shop to break the beads. Normal tires like mud or all terrains are no problem to dismount but Baja's and Projects are hard to dismount.
It's not about how much faster you can go, it's about how much longer you can go faster.

Re: How to intentionally pop a bead off a wheel?
Yeah, the tires ended up in my trailer and I'm taking them to discount today to pop the inner bead loose. I'll take them home and do the rest by hand. I tried a couple different methods and some leverage ideas too and had no luck. So it's on stands in the driveway and hopefully I'll have them swapped out tonight. Thanks for the replies everyone! The tires/wheels won this time! LOL

Have them pop the new tires on while you are there and then put the beadlocks on at home. 5 bucks is worth it to me!

Old baaja survival method is to take the little dohicky out of the valve stem then drive up on the tire with the front tire you can turn and drive around the rim.
