It was always fun watching him stand convention on its ear: jumping trucks over motorcycles, making "the world's finest road car" into an off roader, digging Lady Gaga...?
Hey! You kids!! Get OFF my driveway!!! If you can't go away happy, just go away!
I am getting my shop (SDHQ) to make up some stickers for me. I will have them with me this weekend at the HDRA race at my trailer. While I'm not sure what tbe slogan will be (score 44 forever or something like that) I am sure that they will be given to everyone who makes a donation which I will be sending to whoever is handling putting Chuck to rest.
I will try and work out a way to make these available for people who aren't going to Reno also. Just gotta figure out how.
Standing at the tree bar, having some drinks with the crew, and after 10 mins or so, Chuck says, "I just realized I've been having a conversation with a guy that's not wearing any pants!"
Some people you can describe in a few words... but with Chuck I don't think words alone would ever work. Or pictures. His "image" would at times scare away small children... but once you talked to him you got to see what a nice guy he really was. Hell, I'd go as far to say I thought Chuck was one cool dude. Which might not make him happy because I don't think Chuck ever wanted to be cool. I don't know what his fashion sense was back in the 70's or 80's but from the 90's to his passing I don't think he changed it up much. He found a groove that worked and he stuck with it. I can't remember the first time I met Chuck but I do remember the IP "jump" event that was held at his place a lot of years ago. I'll never forget his double decker wheelie machine or the look on his neighbors face when he would fire that thing up. I thought he was an f'ing lunatic and in my book that was pretty rad. Then I learned about his "stunts" that he had managed to survive in his younger days. Those stunts were insanely stupid. 100+ feet to a flat landing? Who in their right mind would ever think that would go well? I had a few really awesome chat sessions with Chuck over the years and it was always about the most random stuff. There was usually plenty of waiting around time during the races and he never failed to entertain the absolute you know what out of me. His stance on male nail polish was one of them. And Black clothing. The Geo Tracker back flip stunt another.
One of my favorite rescue memories of Chuck was watching him upright the Herbst TT right after it had flipped. The dust hadn't even settled from the crash and Chuck was already hooking the strap to it. The Rolls must have been going 35 mph by the time the slack in the strap was gone... that TT literally jumped into the air and damn near did another full flip before it came crashing down. That is one of my top 10 most memorable desert racing related moments. Thinking about that still makes me laugh. But my favorite memory will always be getting to cruise down Vegas Blvd in the Rolls. I can't remember where I was coming from or where I was going but the sun was setting and Chuck had offered to give me a lift. We couldn't hear each other because the exhaust was so damn loud. I gave him pretty simple directions and I'm pretty sure Chuck dropped me off at the wrong hotel. That didn't bother me a bit because the drive had been so much fun. I'll never forget all of the sounds and smells that the Rolls made as we cruised down the strip or the looks on peoples faces as we cruised by.
One Strange guy, a good friend, a guy you hated to see and loved too see at the same time when he came pulling up to help, very sad day, I made a call last month to Chuck by mistake and had a great conversation with him, glad now I dialed the wrong Chuck. RIP my friend and we will miss Score44 and I agree he was one cool dude!
