i don't think big time races don't come on here much because of threads like this , this is pretty tame . i just think they have better things to do .
as Casey says in every drivers meeting "if they caught you you're already passed on time" move over

    Re: Tire Questions

On a positive note, I looked up some specs on Tire Weight/Rotating Mass between BFG's, Toyo's, and Generals. This should give you a facts based (by the manufacturers websites) comparison to start your selection process.

    Manufacturer........Size..................Weight

    BFG MT KM2.........37X12.50R17.......70.66 LBS
    .........................38X14.50R17........81.75 LBS
.........................40X14.50R17........81.7 LBS (Not sure how this is possible, but this is what was listed)

General Tire.........35X12.50R17.......76.5 LBS (I couldn't get specs on the 37's. The 35's are 76.5 LBS I would assume the 37 would add 9+LBS)
    Grabber...............37X12.50R17.......87.0 LBS (ESTIMATED)

    Toyo MT-R..........37X13.50R17........92.6 LBS
    .........................40X13.50R17......105.8 LBS

You said that you currently use 37" Toyo's. If you plan on going to 39" BFG's as some have suggested; based on the Manufactures Websites (unless their listed weights are inaccurate) you will actually save 10.9 LBS/Tire of Rotating Mass/Weight.

As stated before other factors are to be considered in stepping up to a bigger tire. But as far as Rotating Mass and weight are concerned, going to the Bigger BFG's as opposed to the Toyo's you currently have should in principal be easier on your Drivetrain, Shocks, etc.

As Listed the 39" BFG's are lighter than the 37's from General Tire and Toyo. (Again according to the manufactures websites)

    Re: Tire Questions

Your weight comparison is for a BFG MT km2. Lmao. Have you ever heard of a BAJA T/A or BAJA K/R? That would be a more appropriate tire for a TT. They are those tires people sell used in the classifieds advertised as PROJECTS here on RDC. Im not trying to be a smart arse but seriously I think some people should think about how much knowledge they think they have before contributing their $.02.

As for my tire choice I have been very happy with General. We run them on the TLs and I raced on them in a class 6 truck for the 2010 baja 1000 and we had no flats in a 5500 lb. truck. Tire life depends a lot on ones driving style. Also if you own a TT go after free tires.

But heck we are on RDC and Im at a key board so my race or tire experience does not apply. I run BFG A/Ts on my superduty 315/75 r17s they work really well Ive never been stuck with them and I get 30,000 miles out of them and I have never had a flat on them either (knock on wood) so with my professional RDC edumakated key board experience I would say buy a set of those bad boys and they will out live your TT more than likely. Lmao. Its the same tire ford puts on that new luxery prerunner I believe its called a Raptor.

But seriously for the guy looking for honest help check out Generals. If you really want to jump up to a 39" really try to figure out if it will be worth it in the long run. With all of the possible mods that could possibly be needed. Just my $.02

    Re: Tire Questions

I will put in another vote for the BFGs. We run the KRTs and have not had any flats. 39" are going to be significantly harder on parts IMHO stick with 37". Good luck at the 1000

if you look on the inside of the drivers side door, it will tell you what size tire as well as the correct PSI to be running.

    general 37's

    Re: Tire Questions

If SCORE had qualifying, anybody with a legit shot at winning the race would not have to worry about moving roadblocks. Absent that, I think its naive to think that somebody isn't going to enter their precious machine simply because they aren't as fast as somebody starting behind them.

jwoog- It's that damn opposing thumb deal. Most big time races just don't have thumbs...or fingers. But they do have racers.

Congrats on the purchase, was that you guys at the record race?; if so we were the red 4 seater in class 1 behind you (I guess I'll find out from the brain trust it was stupid to race our 4 seater in class 1...) rough, long day for us but we finished. Most guys seem to love whatever tire they can score a deal on and that is the determining factor. We've run BFG's for a long time and have always had good luck with them, I prefer the pattern on the Baja TA's over the projects but then I never tried grooving the projects, plus BFG's support has always been appreciated. As some have said and it's great advice: Whatever makes it work best. I have friends that run Toyo's who are very happy and 95% of the time it's not the tire that fails on it's own (at least in my case).

Now to start more drama: IMHO I'd like to see the classes limited to a maximum of 37's. This trend toward more/bigger is tearing up what little resources we have left. I tested at Barstow a day after a notable TT team on 39 or 40's and the place was hammered and the course after the 500 was gnarly and a significant amount has to be contributed to the move toward the 39's-42's... Yeah, I get the classes are "unlimited" but at some time we need to start considering the sport, our limited resources for racing and the future. Flame away!

Oh and I wish I had the stones to say what the heck and pick up a deal on a TT or Class 1; congrats and enjoy!
That was us in that race. We raced it 4 times now. Not a lot of luck so far. Missed the podium by one car last time. thanks for the support. Bob

    Re: Tire Questions

For all of you that gave intelligent and positive comments, thanks. I don't get to many races stateside so it helps to hear what others are doing. We've had good luck racing with General's at 35lbs but it's always good to hear other opinions.

It's a shame that there was so much BS on this thread by a few idiots. I had several guys respond to me via PM so they could avoid the bitches and their drama. The shameful part of this is that they would not say this crap if they weren't hiding behind their keyboards.
