Button heads are the weak link here.
Use socket head cap screws, IMO.
You can always get a pair of channel
locks on em', or weld an old allen wrench
in em' if ya have to.
The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.

Re: The best way to attach a skid plate
counter sinking low head allens always worked for me. allen heads are not ment to be torqued on with an impact nor hammered off with an impact. floating nuts in te tabs and a counter sunk bolt/allen will work good.

Re: The best way to attach a skid plate
Just for clarity, to use low head SHCS you would counterbore, not countersink.
The nice thing about low heads is you can counterbore a little oversize to allow for tolerances, but countersunk bolts have to be right on.

Re: The best way to attach a skid plate
be careful with the low profile SHCS the allen is smaller than the standard head version.

Re: The best way to attach a skid plate
I use carriage bolts. Just drill the skid plate so the square part of the bolt forms into the skid plate and tighten it up.

Re: The best way to attach a skid plate
I like the carriage bolt idea, and you can get grade 8 carriage bolts but the problem is you have to get to the back side of them to remove them which will be difficult in my situation. if there is access I think its the best way.

I think the carriage bolt idea is a good way to go as well. . .
