If you can't remove the skid plate from underneath the vehicle, you will be hating life when it comes to working on it out in the desert.

Re: The best way to attach a skid plate

Guess it just depends on where the bolts are placed and what access is like. . .if the bolts are in the corners and you can get a wrench at the nut on the back without a problem then it wouldn't be bad. . .at least not any worse than a stripped out or worn down bolt head.

If you took the carriage bolts and their attachment points into consideration when you designed the skid plate I'm sure you could make it work without any problems.

Have you ever hung upside down inside the cab of a race truck trying to work on something mounted to the floor, not fun?

Re: The best way to attach a skid plate

Not a race truck, but our '49 Jeep Willy's and no it isn't fun. . .that's why I said if the access was there it wouldn't be too bad and also mentioned taking the mounting points into consideration when making the skid plate and skid plate frame you could make sure you had good access.

I've seen several desert trucks where you could practically crawl into the space between the truck and the front skid plate. . .if the space isn't there then no it woulndn't be a good ideas at all, but each truck and is gonna be unique; on some it would work on others it wouldn't.

Our Willy's made use of carriage bolts a LOT and I've gotten rid of most of them because they were inconvenient to remove/install so it's not the perfect answer. . .it was someone's suggestion that sounded like a good idea under the right circumstances and must work for them.

Especially if you laser cut your skid plate it's easy to cut the square hole for the carriage bolt.
