Race radio pricing other than PCI or Rugged
So, I stopped by a Ham radio store today just because I was bored & never been in one. I found radios cheaper than PCI & Rugged by more than half the price with more watts.
Just curious what the difference is if any at all. Similar PCI Kenwood radio runs $449.95 & only 50watts. Not trying to stir pots but really wanting to know why the big price difference. Radios at $450 were way better than either of these.
Kenwood
65watts
200 channel memory
$164.95

Because that is a HAM radio not a race radio.

Re: Race radio pricing other than PCI or Rugged
Ham radio stores have every type of radio frequency radio in the world. There were lots of other radios, this was the only one I could find online that matched the ones I saw.
The guy I had helping me said these radios work on those frequencies.
BTW- a buddy of mine I spoke to just so happened to buy his race radio at a Ham radio store. Its small & only 25watts never knew he did.

Re: Race radio pricing other than PCI or Rugged
My radio is over 10 years old and I originally bought it from Ham radio outlet in san diego if I remember right. They were right off the freeway in kerney mesa near the old general dynamics buildings. No clue if they're still there. But it still works great. If I remember right I paid them like $25 to open it up and do the mod for me. With antenna and everything it was like $200. Again, this was quite a while ago though so who knows these days...

Re: Race radio pricing other than PCI or Rugged
Call it whatever you want...I have had this radio in my truck for years and it receives and transmits over the same frequency as the so called "race radio" and I can program any freq in it just like a car radio, and can input ANY freq manually and don't have to bring it anywhere to have it prorammed... http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-010078 It's 75 watts and I have many times sat next to another of our chase trucks with a race radio and been able to hear and transmit much further than it did. My electrical ability is taxed just hooking up positive and negative wires, but was easily able to do the transmit mod. Don't wanna take away anything from PCI or Rugged but I am on a super tight budget and can't pay what they charge...not gonna be sorry for it either..
