Re: Race radio pricing other than PCI or Rugged

I was going to leave it alone, but since you asked for a PCI response...

So you're telling me Weatherman is an exacto knife away from dialing any frequency he wants to talk on when he's in the airpline this November???? Maybe those Kenwood TK-790's are just a waste of weight in the airplane! I bet Ham Radio Outlet can hook us with a TM-271 instead? Oh wait, we are a Kenwood Distributor we 'could' buy those if we wanted to!!!

Ham radios aren't for racing. It's like using a cheap Autozone shock instead of a Fox Shock. I'm sure the guy at Autozone is real helpful too and will tell you that you don't need an expensive part, but it's not the right part for the application. If you're a limited chase or spectating, sure. Get one. But when they break, please don't bring them to the trailer. They're illegally modified to transmit in the freq's you're trying to use and they don't work well there. There is a reason the Kenwood TK-7360 is $450 and the Kenwood TM-281 is $150. And it's not because PCI sells the 7360 and Ham Radio Outlet sells the 281. They didn't make two identical radios, brand one for us and one for them and ask us to set the prices. But good sales pitch, hope you aren't as sellable when you go buy a used car! SCORE doesn't outlaw the stuff in their rule book to hurt sales for Ham Radio Outlet. We know they could be useful for spectators that would listen only or crew that would not be looking to transmit, just listen. The reason we don't sell them for those applications is the quality. We stand behind what we sell and only sell the best products.

There are plenty of threads about this subject, so use the search feature if you need more info. Or read SoCalRally's post. He is in no way affiliated with PCI, but it looks like he should be!

You mention,'before a race', so I assume you are a racer! Our racing intercoms do not have any squelch adjustment and they are not voice activated. They are totally duplex operating with no annoying side tone, like being in a cone of silence and not have any amplified intrusive noises including, but not limited to; rocks kicked up hitting the chassis, clacking heim joints, break calipers, panel creaks and the engine and exhaust noises. You still are able to discern these noises, but at a level that is not aggreviating and when the race is over you don't keep hearing it for hours after. This describes P C I' s Racing Intercom. What you describe is an inexpensive play car intercom. I certainly hope you wern't sold the wrong tool for the job

I have about 3 of the HAM radios. I bought them for the guys who come out and chase for me, I did not want to spend a lot of money buying these in case the guys break one. I never had an issue with a HAM radio they seem pretty solid but in my race truck and my pits I only use PCI or Racer X. They are at all the races and are ALWAYS willing to help. They have gone above and beyond for me before and you cannot put a price tag on that. If you are looking for a good radio the HAM one is fine but if you are putting it in a racetruck....go to the experts. My 2 cents.
www.Damagedgoodsonline.com for quality used motorcycle parts. We buy blown up motorcycles.

Missy Diablo I know its a far better product but wanted to know the difference. As I want to know the difference or option about everything. For a long time (like responses in this post) its cut & dry with most. NOPE no options this is what works & only works period don't ask again. I don't live by that rule & want to know & learn about it.

In one way it makes sense to sell a cheaper version for these people (not in a race car.) Which could help out if needed in some really bad situations (being able to dial in a specific freq.) As in a team hanging on a cliff for hours with no help & broken radio.
Still don't get the point good to listen & NOT transmit? Why? Your in range & can hear each other. I know California Penal code prohibits transmitting on these freq. But, boogles my mind that if I spend more money on a product I can? Still not about being licensed to do so. If I'm in my Jeep & someone is hurt or needs emergency help I will transmit & get them help (its the right thing to do.)

Like I have said several times not trying to step on toes just being a 8yr old asking questions.

BTW I can sell the shat out of a used car & run PCI stuff where needed
I like food, dreams & whispers!!!!

Why aren't you guys pitching the GPS-based AVL on these units (TK-7360) for race trackers?

On a side note, I'm pretty sure that transmitting on a HAM radio without a Ham radio lic is a $10,000 fine.
