I don't live by that rule & want to know & learn about it.
In one way it makes sense to sell a cheaper version for these people (not in a race car.) Which could help out if needed in some really bad situations (being able to dial in a specific freq.) As in a team hanging on a cliff for hours with no help & broken radio.
Still don't get the point good to listen & NOT transmit? Why? Your in range & can hear each other. I know California Penal code prohibits transmitting on these freq. But, boogles my mind that if I spend more money on a product I can? Still not about being licensed to do so. If I'm in my Jeep & someone is hurt or needs emergency help I will transmit & get them help (its the right thing to do.)
Like I have said several times not trying to step on toes just being a 8yr old asking questions.
BTW I can sell the shat out of a used car & run PCI stuff where needed

Transmitting using a Amateur radio has nothing to do with the California Penal Code, unless you are interfering with public emergency communications. Amateur falls under the FCC and yes, you need a license. I have two, my Amateur and GMRS license. Everyone is giving you good info as to what works for racing. If you are interesting in Amateur, there are numerous websites that can answer your questions.

Re: Race radio pricing other than PCI or Rugged
I tried the ham radio route because I could not afford to buy a full on race radio. One of the things that I figured out was as I got further up the frequency band the the output power dropped off dramatically. Also I found out from a friend I was bleeding all over another channel and because of the frequency drop off it was actually only putting out about 45 watts. So there in lies the rub. The radio May communicate fine with a radio on the same channel but tends to cause issues with other channels near by.
The body of a Kenwood Tk730 or Tk790 are built like tanks and are way more durable than a sheet metal box with PC board screwed to it like some Ham radios. The first time I opened up a Tk730H radio I was amazed at the solid body that the radio was machined out of is nothing like some of the armature Ham radios I have seem.
In the end it is not about money, it is about the person bleeding to death on the side of the road and Weatherman can't hear them calling for help because of all the interference from ham radios and open mics someone is sitting on.
That's just my opinion and opinions are like farts, some stink and some don't.:-)
And if you can't afford a new race radio, look for a used or refurbished one, just a thought, that is what I did.
