all you need is compression to make rpms. and geared decent. compression is our little friend for rpms. understand now on the intake, common upgrade with windsor adapters. windsor has more intakes available in high perf application. adapter plates are to compensate for the different deck height. windsor is shorter compared to 400. Back in the day helped a guy about 20+ yrs ago and he used wood for spacer plates on his first cobrajet headed 400 ford in a mudd truck. turning about 6800 rpm. it was Oak wood. not much for heat transfer with wood. it freakin worked and scary simple to do and port!

Compression is a problem in Baja,This truck will run most of its time on Pemex and its not always the highest octane!!!!!!!!!

Re: Ford 400m/MUTT
so a multistike ignition system like MSD? a modern combustion chamber to scare off detonation/pre ignition. in this case this is a better engine than 460 because of bigger bore. one of the tricks to fend off ignition issues is small bore and more stroke. so you thinking like 9 to 1 comp i guess. anything to get cool as possible air into truck. anything better than heated air off engine is a good thing. stroke of crank helps with keeping the combustion chamber from being lazy. 400 ford 4.0" stroke and if i remember 434 is 4.200 stroke, sweet!

Can you explain how compression helps?

if i'm turning rpms like 6000+ to 8000 or more. you don't do it with 8 to 1 comp in naturally aspirated engine. but build a engine to the fuel you have. 87 octane or 114 or something better. lazy combustion chamber don't make rpm's well. used to run some mudd trucks 9800 rpms 15 to 1 comp, our small blocks chevy 420"was 9200 14 to 1. this was about 20 yrs ago. i still play but not extreme like that anymore. ran even higher but engine block OEM would move around and strange bearing wear in our engines. Getting higher end blocks weren't as available like they are today especially ford stuff!

what do you think your fuel quality is at on octane??

Re: Ford 400m/MUTT
i have heard of this down their. that sucks! So decent compression maybe 9 to 1 and modern combustion chamber in heads and work your quench. their are reverse flow heads for these engines which helps with pre ignition/detonation issues. stuff to be aware of if not familar with. what type ignition MSD phaseable rotor is good thing!

Re: Ford 400m/MUTT
John Kaase put together a 400M for the Engine Masters challenge that famously shut down every other motor manufacturer in HP per cubic inch. And it made like 470Hp at 2200 rpms. Even the vaunted Hemi's and Ford Boss motors couldn't compete..... but it was NOT cheap or easy to do.
IMHO if you are wanting a 'big' motor in your rig, use a 429/460. Stroking one of these is very inexpensive, reliable, and makes easy-big HP/TQ. My $3500 514 stroker with D3VE heads and a mechanical roller has dynoed 600lbs/ft TQ at the fly wheel reliably since 1999 with only rings/bearings/valve springs to freshen it up in 2004. Throw the smogger D3VE's away and put a set of good aluminum heads on it and gain another 100HP. Just remember to pay attention to the oiling system: top end restrictors, drain back, crank scraper, etc.
