Re: HDPE for skid plate??`
We had a UHMW plate on the 5 car. Would glide right over stuff. Felt a little weird as the floor would flex a little as you slid over rocks. It was 1/2' thick and used lots of countersunk Allen's to mount.

Re: HDPE for skid plate??`
UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethelene) is what most Ultra4 and crawlers use. Usually backed by a hardened alum plate. 1/4" to 1/2" thick UHMW, depending on the backing. The black is stronger, harder, and cheaper than the white because it contains recycle. It cuts easy but is a BI_ch to finish well. Most use countersunk allens or carriage bolts if they can get to the backside. Shop around. Priceing is all over the place. Teflon (PTFE) is probably x2+ in price, and not as tough.
To cut straights of both UHMW and Aluminum, put it on a wet lawn and use a well grounded, carbide tipped Skill Saw. The grass and moisture will cool and lubricate the cut. Warning...The chips are HOT!
