    Chevy, Ford, or VW?

Financially I'm a long way away from a project (new house, new baby, etc), but I've been day dreaming a lot about what I want to build. Right now it's narrowed down to a I-beam Ranger, a Chevy C series PU from 73-87, or a VW bug. What would you build, and WHY? They each have strengths , the ford has a good amount of travel, the chevy has a V8, and the VW's are cheap and plentiful. They also have faults (for me) I know NOTHING about VW's. The ford only has a 4 or 6 cylinder, and the chevy could be a PITA with emissions. I want to seat three people, and just play in the desert. Street legal would be a plus. What would you build, and WHY? Which would be cheapest in your opinion? Which has the most aftermarket? What needs the least work to be a fun toy? What needs the most? Which has the most DIY mods? Thanks in advance, Joe

Well first I don't think that if its not street legal that you have to smog it. But I do know for a fact that if its a 75 or older that you don't need to smog it. My 75 chevy is registered on the street in CA, and all I had to do was mail in the fee to the state and they mailed me my plates.
Just walk away. I will give you safe passage in the Wasteland. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror. I await your answer.----The Lord Humongous
