SOHC 4.0L cannot get belt squeal to go away
I have a 4.0 SOHC from a 2001 explorer. We have a powermaster 220 alternator on it and a tc pump using the stock sohc pump mount just modified and it has the Howe prerunner 5.375 pulley on it. I have the nice Gatorz serpentine 6 rib belts and at first I tried going to the next bigger size cause it seemed it was to tight. The squeal starts immediately and only goes away for a little while by using a bar of soap which tells me its slipping. At first we replaced the two roller pulleys thinking it might be the bearings in them, did not make a difference. Dad seems to think that I need to put all aftermarket pulleys on it for it to go away, i told him that would not matter because the tc pump and pulley i have is not meant for that motor. He also seems to think there are different rib depths and the power master alt pulley, the howe steering pulley need to be the same depth and same width, there both 6 rib.
Any suggestions?

Re: SOHC 4.0L cannot get belt squeal to go away
Never had luck with the GoodYear Gatorbacks. I worked for a drag team that got them free and we would toss them after 2 or 3 1/4 mile runs. They get a glaze on them that causes them to squeal very quick. Once they squeal they are done they already have a glaze and should be replaced. They are far from good, they stretch more than any belt I have used and do it quick. Try Poly-Cog instead.
If you have modified and of the brackets or If the belts have any signs of wear or the side or are white on the sides. Then you need to get the pulley's aligned. Most hot rod shops have the digital tool to do this.
Also your dad is dead on that the pulleys need to be most importantly the same width then the same depth. Look at factory pulley set-up everything is the same width and depth for a reason.

Make sure that the belt wraps around at least 1/3 of all the pulley's.
