best class to start racing???
Which is a good class to start racing and is not too expensive? I would like to start racing in the future with my family, I think class 11 would be a good choice, theres a lot of competition in that class and is very cheap. Any other suggestions???

Re: best class to start racing???
It depends on what your into- typically trucks are more expensive compared to a 9 car or a class 11. If you into buggies- a 9 car is an excellent way to start. alot of cars to run with- fairly cheap to prep- and if you roll it there will be less work to do then compaired to a class11. If your into trucks then Jeepspeed or 7 stock is the best place to start. After that break out you checkbook.

Class 11 is a good start. Most of the parts are stock. You can get them from a junk yard. You figure they have been around 40 years and are still working.Best of luck.

We battled with this decision for at least 1 1/2 years. We went from Protruck to Class 10 to CLass 5 unlimited and finally settled on Class 12. We wanted a class that was somewhat reasonable financially but had good competition. Most important we wanted exposure. Although there is good exposure in Class 9, 11 and 5, there seems to be alot more exposure in Class 12.
We made a sponsor portfolio and went out and hit up all the businesses we had realationships with. Being we build our own cars and are dealers for just about all the parts we opted on building it ourselves rather than buying one. We found TONS of great deals on Class 12 cars. Generally priced around $25,000 - $35,000 preped and ready to go.
In the end i think with the WIKS motor and the Mendeola 4 speed we'll be running i think we'll be out less than $40,000 for the car. Keep in mind that once you get the car you have all the support equipment. Example: Spare Tires, spare wheels, spare lights, fuel jugs, fuel, preps, travel and hotel expenses, entry fees, trailers, trucks, prerunners (if your going to prerun), etc, etc, etc. Seems like it never ends so write out written cost to fully calculate all the expenses. Good luck on your decision.
Let me know if you need a 12 Car.

By far i think you should start in class 11 one reason is that it is cheap anoughter is it will teach you how to drive so that when you do move up to 5/1600 or 1600 or up it will teach you how to pick lines better and how to get through a sand wash....

Re: best class to start racing???
im surprised no one has suggested the 1450 class. its a great class to run. super fun, kick back, low stress, competitive and action packed all in the same time! its also cheaper to run cus its a sportsman class, that means no payback....but honestly who races for the money.........i dont know too many. every race there is 15+ trucks and it makes for some good action. and since the class is unlimited you can go from wild to mild as far as your vehicle goes. you can build a $75,000 V-8 powered ranger like camburg or some others that have raced the class or you can build a $10,000 4cyl powered toyota like mine and have fun either way and still be competitive. cus remember, its not about how fast you can go on the first lap, its about setting a good pace and actually finishing the race!
so for a starter class, 1450 deffinetly gets my vote.......oh and if you are into buggies there also the 1300 sportsman class. great class too.

Re: best class to start racing???
I have to agree with the guy who says 5/1600 is the best (1/2 1600 would also be good.....but I happen to like baja bugs better). It's pretty inexpensive, but very fun, and extremely competitive. Class 11 and 9 are going to beat you up too much. Class 5, 7s, 7, 10, 12, are all too expensive to jump right into, unless you have a sponsor (as I do) who is going to foot the bill.
5/1600 is also fairly fast, so you won't get bored too fast. Speed is addictive, and the more you have, the more you want. Once you drive an 11 or 9 car on a dry lake, you'll be wishing you could be faster in the whoops or the washes.
Whatever you do, best wishes to you

I think 1450 is a great class to start out as well. Its fairly cheap, prep is very limited (and cheap) and its an awesome money/speed ratio. All the guys that race arent cut throat, everyone is pretty kick back. Hell, you can start out w/ a junkyard truck and shoot from there.
