    Nat\'l forest mgmt plan

I just got this e-mail, please visit the web-site below and take 2 seconds to send your e-mail about the national forest OHV management plan.

    Dear ARRA Member,

While our attention is understandably focused on the historic world events now at hand, there are a couple of issues concerning recreation of which you should be aware. Included in this alert are links to background information on National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service management plans that could severely restrict or ban certain forms of recreation and could set an adverse precedent in future management planning. In addition, there are sample letters which we encourage you to send to the National Park and U.S. Forest Service planning teams. Please feel free to add to these letters or to write your own.

It is absolutely imperative not to miss these opportunities to comment on local management plans. Your participation DOES make a difference.

Our friends in Utah need our help. Anti-access groups are attempting to drastically shift the management of Utah's Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Inequitable management policy for Utah forests could set a dangerous precedent for the future management of all forests. We have only one week to try and save many wonderful roads and trails.

The Wasatch-Cache National Forest is amending its Forest Plan. The Forest Service (FS) has released several management alternatives and has expressed "alternative 6" to be its preferred management plan. This plan is consistent with the severely restrictive principles of the Roadless Area Conservation Rule and greatly limits recreational access. Alternative 5 offers a far more balanced approach to recreation management and is based on the Multiple Use Sustained Yield Act of 1960. This standard of management recognizes recreation as a legitimate use of national forest land, which can be managed while maintaining the land's natural integrity.

All six of the alternative plans are subject to public comment until November 1, 2001. The forest plans can be viewed in their entirety at: http://www.fs.fed.us/wcnf/</A>

Comment letters are urgently needed. Please click on the button below or visit the action center at http://www.responsiblerecreation.org/grassroots</A> to send your comments before the November 1, 2001 deadline or send a letter directly to:
