Are Jaz fuel cells race legal?
I just picked up a Jaz fuel cell from a buddy and heard an opinion from a prerunner dude that said Jaz fuel cells are not race legal, but Fuel Safes are. Did a search and couldn't find anything. Also, can I paint it whatever color I want or does it have to be red? I plan on racing MORE first and then maybe MDR, maybe their rules are different concerning fuel cells.

yes for MDR and MORE. "technically" for SCORE i have heard they are not legal. i run one in my truck and have no problems with tech. the important thing is that its the polyethelene(sp) bladder in a metal can. thats what mine is.

I have one on my truck and never have been questioned about its legality. Considering the same group does tech for most of the races, if it passes at one of the sactioning bodies it should pass all of them

Thanks guys. I will probably never race SCORE ($$$), so I'm not worried. BTW, can I paint it like a gunmetal grey or black so it doesn't stick out so much on the street? (legality issues of course)

That might cause a few eyebrows at tech to be raised. If you want it not to stand out on the street I would recommend some sort of sides to be built in that can be removed during racing

Matt, just make some aluminum or sheetmetal sides that are held on with dzus tabs that surround the cage of the cell. Then you can paint them whatever you want.

Re: Are Jaz fuel cells race legal?
The brand of fuel cell is not important. What is important is that the fuel cell has to be a bladder that is completely encased in alum or sheet metal. You might have one of those plastic fuel cells...those are not legal.

Re: Are Jaz fuel cells race legal?
No, its the kind that is completely encased in red painted metal (steel I think). However, the "bladder" seems to be to just be plastic. I was under the impression that they were rubber bladders, meh. I have to repaint it, replace the foam with Fuel Safe foam (its dissolving) and figure out my pump/lines/mounting situation.

Re: Are Jaz fuel cells race legal?
Actually, the plastic molded fuel cells are legal in all sanctioning bodies for off-road racing, call fuel safe and ask them. When I bought mine it was an option since it was a custom made cells, for a 5 open car with a cut in the bottom for the shifter and throttle linkage. The inside is also a foam bladder and has an aluminum can to go around, which makes it 100% race legal.

Re: Are Jaz fuel cells race legal?
What your describing sounds legal.Cells dont need a flexable rubber bladder to be legal. They can be either the rubber kind or the plastic type as long as they have appropriate fittings. They BOTH need to be encased in a aluminum or steel can/shell to support it.Usually the plastic cells will be imprinted or lettered with what they are legal for.My "plastic" type Fuel safe in an aluminum can says approved for score right on it.
