Ankle pivoting Pedals

I was reading older threads to decide what kind of seats to use in our race truck, I decided to go with an FIA approved seat because it is supposed to be betther for your back in the long run. Someone said that "ankle pivoting pedals" were the cause of some peoples back pain after races. What is this? Is it just floor mount to hanging?
