Ford Supercharged 5.4l motor in a prerunner?

Anybody have any real world experience with the ford supercharged lightning/harley davidson special edition motors (2001-2003)? *Is there a significant increase in power? *Is it noticeable, or just a conversation piece? *How does this power relate to a prerunner application, is it usable/worthwhile? *I have the opportunity to do a complete engine swap in a regularly aspirated f150 prerunner "project" (aren't they all?), and was curious if it was worth the effort..... *

The bottom line is, I'm looking for some HP while keeping it CA smog legal. *Is there other avenues to explore?

Any opinion on the matter would be helpfull.

Ask Frank Hines about it... Dale runs a VERY mean Lightning that I think runs low 10 second times in the 1/4. It started out mild (if a Ford Lightning can ever be considered mild) and with lots of work and $$$ has been transformed into a wicked fast truck.

Well, the first thing you should know is that the Harley Davidson model and Lightning have different power outputs (HD = 360, Lightning = 380hp). My wife drives an 03' Lightning that I also use to tow my prerunner (built off of a 94' Lightning chassis), and it has balls. There is a reason why the Ford Lightning was the fastest production truck built for years -- and not because its light. The new Dodge RAM RT10 (Viper V10 engine, 500hp, 500tq) barely edges it out in 0-60 and 1/4 mile performance. Plus you can spend less than a grand and bump up your hp and tq into the 500+hp range with pullys, chip and exhaust.

The only problem I would be concerned with is heat. I contemplated running a Kenne Belle on my 94' to get cheap power, but I was concerned that keeping the SC spinning in the power range I am usually in (4000-5500 RPM) when I take the truck out, I would run into heat and detonation problems. I ended up just swapping in a new cam and some AFR aluminum heads. Not as much power, but a significant improvement and its reliable as hell.

Re: Ford Supercharged 5.4l motor in a prerunner?

Well I will tell dale to look at this thread. Yes he has ran 10.39 ? but that was with nigtous and an after marked SC. he ran a 11.03 with just the SC. I know the stock one is setting on a shelf at the race shop along with his first Works SC witch I think was a 140. The one that is on there now is a works 160. I think. I know he blows the guys with kenny bells blower away all the time. but that is in the 1/4 mile I really don't know how that would compare to offroading. My Harley Davidson has good power. But I have never tow with it. The engines and blower look the same between both so I would think the differance in power is in the computer. also Dale has done work to the engine for it to live with the power. I think it dyno at 900hp to the wheel but I'm not 100% sure on that.
