    Question about 5.4L

I have a 98 F 150, 2wd, 5.4L. The check engine light came on a few weeks ago. I had the code pulled at Autozone and they told me that I needed a mass air flow sensor. So I bought one from them. They didn't have a new one in stock so I bought the "reman" sensor. I put it in and reset the computer but yet it is still coming on and giving a maf sensor code. I went back and exchanged that sensor and it still does the same thing. Is it possible to get 2 bad remaned sensor's in a row? Also when the light comes on the tranny shift's real hard. The truck has a shift kit in it so it has always shifted hard. It shifts early. When you get on it hard it chirps in all gears. So today I reset the computer and drove it for about 15 miles without the light coming on. As soon as I cleaned the K and n and reinstalled it the check engine light came on. Is it a possible vacuum thing? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

Be careful with oil on the K&N. A few years ago, Ford issued a T.S.B. to their dealers about contaminated Mass Air sensors from the oil on the K&N style filters. Clean the censor (at your own risk) with electrical contact cleaner or denatured alcohol, and see if the light goes off without resetting the ECU. Keep in mind the code will be stored in the ECU, but the light will tell you if you solved the problem.

your first problem was letting autozone diagnose your problem. get it to a real technician if you cant handle it on your own.

you might want to go and re-check the codes. we had a problem with the check engine light on my bro.'s truck and got different codes after checking them the first time. it ended up being an egr port problem. common on high mileage engines. it was a 4.6L.
