Ford 5.0 Transmission
Just wondering if anyone had any experience putting a T-5 (mustang 5speed) behind a 302 V8 in an offroad application? Is it even a viable option in truck (Ranger Ext. Cab)? I know it will hold up based on HP and torque, but havent heard of them being used in the dezert.

Re: Ford 5.0 Transmission
But slush boxes are so much nicer in the dez. As long as you keep them cool. But I am sure they will be fine....as in the stick for off roading. Go for it.

Re: Ford 5.0 Transmission
I used a T-5 in 2 4cylinder Rangers & I never had problems, but there's a big difference between a 2.3 and a 5.0.
I know a little German... he's sitting over there.

Re: Ford 5.0 Transmission
as far as i know its been done regularly. i saw or read in a magazine some one had a kit to do that to a ranger. ill try to remember and post it. the t5 is an up grade to the stock mustang 5.0 5sp so it should have ok strength. is it 4x4?

Re: Ford 5.0 Transmission
In my opinion it will not hold up well in a desert truck. They are not very reliable in a stock mustang, and I don't think they will hold up any better in a truck.
If you have to go stick get a 4 speed toploader. Try this guy I have dealt with him and he is great: http://www.davidkeetoploaders.com

Re: Ford 5.0 Transmission
This is the kinda info that I want to hear, thanks guys.
I would kinda prefer to go with a stick, just to minimize headache and associated costs with an auto (coolers, etc...been there)
Sickrick - what kinda application have you used his tranny in, and how $$$ ballpark

PM GregG, ive spoken to him about trannies behind 4.0s and 5.0s, and hes a manual guy. He had some good information having a background of fast mustangs and fast off road trucks. Perfect combo for the matter.

Re: Ford 5.0 Transmission
I have experience with a 4 speed toploader in a 69 bronco. I had to buy a conversion tail shaft to make it work with 4wheel drive (k bar s broncos). It worked great.
I would never again run a stick in a 4x4 or v8 powered prerunner/racer. For crawling and most other times the auto is just to easy. You will also notice alot less shock to
the drivetrain.
I believe that by the time you get e rebuilt toploader with a clucth and bell it will be around $1700-2000. It will be a bargain compared to the several t5s you will have to buy to go the same number of miles offroad.

Re: Ford 5.0 Transmission
Just looking for a cheaper alternative, but for that much I will probably just go the tried and true route with a C4 and manual valve body.
Thanks

Re: Ford 5.0 Transmission
If you are going to run a auto trans you should also consider rebuilding it yourself to save some money. I just did it for the first time in my short course bronco and it worked great.
I bought a c6 trans kit from B&M for $200 and did the work in about 4.5 hours including the valve body. The kit had good instructions and new friction discs and steels and gaskets. It also had instuctions/parts to make it a manual shift valve body.
For under $400 you can get a bunch of upgraded parts that will really help it last (roller bearing thrust washers, steel planetaries). If you can change a cam or rebuild a shock you should have good luck rebuilding a ford c/4 or c/6.
