MX Shock bearing Q's...
Got a new bearing for the upper mount for the shock on my MX bike. The bike is a 95, and the bearing seems like it's seized in there. Even beating on it with an impact socket and a BFH, it doesn't budge. Anybody have the R&R procedure? Thanks.

Re: MX Shock bearing Q's...
Never done this with a shock so this is AT YOUR OWN RISK type of deal. You could get a propane torch and put seem heat into the eye and try using a bench vise as a press to get it out. What you do is take your socket that you were using as a punch and then one that is larger or a piece of wood with a hole in it and close this vice on them to act as a poormans press. You can preload pressure onto the bearing before applying heat then apply as little as possible and put on some more pressure etc. This is providing you tried PB blaster or the likes on the thing allready. Good luck.

or try some WD-40 and let it soak in for 1-2 days, spray extra on while it soaks, then like fashionbiff said rig up a way to press it out with a vise.

Re: MX Shock bearing Q's...
PB Blaster or INOX are both much better penetrants than WD. I would soak in one of these instead. I'll guess the shock eye is aluminum, which opens the door to the possibility of Galvanic corrosion. If so, the aluminum has corroded and the result has actually tighted the fit btwn the bearing and the shock eye. INOX seems to work slightly better in this sort of situation. After a soaking, it may help to move the bearing a little in one direction, then move it the other direction. Keep working it until it comes out.

If you plan on rebuilding the shock...use mapp gas to heat it up and beat it out or use an arbor press. If you bring it by I can give it a shot in a big arbor or a ram.

Re: MX Shock bearing Q's...
Before you beat it to death or press out some precious aluminum...look to see if one side of the bore for the bearing is slightly smaller than the other side. If it is, check the bigger side for a very low profile lock ring.
Some CR's (Showa) had this set up. If you inadvertently just press the bearing out one way...whala, no more snap ring groove. Press it the other way...no more ledge to hold the bearing in. Either way it's time for some expensive parts or some careful work on the milling machine.

Ditto what FAB said. I suspect there is a retaining ring in there. It looks like a wire hoop.

I took the circlips out. I let it soak last night, and came home today. No budging after the vice treatment. I don't want to/ can't ruin my shock, so it's going to the shop and they can do it. Much rather pay the $40, than the $500 for a new rear shock. Thanks for all the ideas guys!
