Best class to get started in?
I just wanted some opinions on what classes are easiest to get into in SCORE on a small budget. I have been thinking about 7s or 8s, or maybe 3. I can do basic fab work for myself, but I am a college student so cost is definately my main issue. I have an old beat Yota, but I don't think taking a 280,000 mile truck and racing it would be very bright, but on the other hand it has a fairly new tranny and is about to get a rearend rebuild. I can rebuild the motor too, but I am not sure if it is worth trying with something so abused. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Check out www.jeepspeed.com This would be an easy class to get started in and you dont have to run the high $ entries of score when you are starting out.

Focus on school is my advice. Having the race car in only a piece of the puzzle. To race a SCORE race it's about $3000.00+ just to get preped, supplies, entry fees and travel. That is if you don't have any free loading friends to baby sit too.
However, I second the Jeep Speed effort if you must do it right now in your life.

I agree with Fly about the school first. The racing will always be there. But as far as the racing goes. I think the prerunner 1400 class like the MDR series has is probably pretty good to start with. Alot of those trucks are prerunners and are still street legal. Or if you want to race SCORE then I would look at a 1/2 1600 car. You can buy a used car that is a few years old and still be some what competitve with it. Because the class rules have only changed a little over the years most updates are bolt on things like disk brakes or Micro stubs. Those are things that can be added to an older car without having to completly build a new car.

I agree with flyhiflylo, concentrate on finishing school. If your yoto is the only vehicle you have right now as your method of transportation, I would not race it. Score is a lot of fun to race, but requires a bigger budget due to locations of the races, ie Mexico. If you are a beggining driver, start by racing some MORE and/or MDR races, they are fun events and great places to learn.

The lap races that MDR/MORE run make it alot easier on a race program.
College & Racing is a hard, expensive combo. Luckily i have a clone to do a good share of the work (and $$$).

I agree with everyone else, finished your studies first. But in the mean time help some of the teams that have cars thata interest you and you can afford. By the time you get out school you will have a good working knowledge of most of the classes and you can make an informed decision at that time.
Also if you can afford it, see if you can get if you can pay, bribe or work for a chance to sit in the second seat
