Re: Class 1\1500 Motor Trans combos
Just go with Ls1/2/6 or if you want the HP for ls7, and go with a nice big tranny fortin or albins would do just fine, or if you got the big bucks go with that mcmillin one, M1 or ???.
LS engines can range from 350 HP stock all the way to 600 HP i believe, just depends on how much you want to spend/rebuild, and how fast you want to go. The LS7 is 530 HP stock i believe, even though its rated at 505 HP, High $ engine, but for stock those arent bad numbers.
Alot are running those combos, if you want exotic, go with a race engine, i know a guy who runs one of those busch series V-6s 500 and some odd HP, we have a nascar v8 in our truggy.
Biggest thing is, you always want more tranny, CVs, hubs etc. than engine.
But hey im not a buggy guy so what the hell do i know.

We are running a new LS7 from UMI and a Fortin transmission with a 4 speed manual shift and torque converter. I beleive the motor will have roughly 660 HP or so (Don't know the exact #'s). This motor and trans combo will be in our New HMS Avenger

Re: Class 1\1500 Motor Trans combos
We are going to be running a Redline LS2 with a Fortin 4 speed non-converter. Power should be a bit over 500hp, haven't driven with it so can't tell you how it is yet.

Re: Class 1\1500 Motor Trans combos
We just ordered new class 1 car and decided to go with this combo. To help save on drive line without going to torque converter we chose the LS7 hopped up just a little bit to 575HP then went with a new Mendeola S4D. Our thought was we would need 650HP with a torque converter car to get the same power to the ground, plus we will have almost twice the fuel economy, less strain on the engine and less parts that could fail. We may go through axles and CV'S at little faster but a $9,000.00 savings on the engine and $4,000.00 savings on the trans will cover the extra cost. We would have considered going to a series 30 car and run 37" tires but then cost get out of control. Add $10,000.00 to motor, add $10,000.00 to for bigger hubs, CV's, axles etc. add $10,000.00 for bigger trans, add $5,000.00 for tires and wheels and who know how much for extra prep cost and additional fuel cost. No matter what be ready to fork out at least $185K or more!

Re: Class 1\1500 Motor Trans combos
We have a 2 seat, TATUM class 1 (Like Letners, Rich Ronco, Todd Romano). We have a 500hp LS1 and HD Mendeola, all the current Tatum class 1 cars have LS1,LS2, or LS6 engines, all use the Mendeola HD. Letner uses a fortin. None of the Mendeola HD's have broke, John Marking won the championship with a Mendeola HD. I saw the new (under construction) Tatum class 1 car has the McMillan tranny . Alot has to do with the driver - for a tranny to survive big HP!
