As I understand it pinging is pre-ignition, and running higher octane gas will get rid of most pinging. I run 91 and it still pings under hard acceleration only at high rpm's, not low. Its fine at high rpm's as long as im not too hard on the gas. Any sugestions of what to look into? has new plugs and wires, timed it and retarded it a bit, I think I have the wrong distributer on it, would that make a difference? thanks for any help

Either timing is to advanced or it is running to lean. Since it is injected it could be a sensor giving bad info to the computer. You say you might have the wrong distributor? Did you build this motor yourself? How did you check the timing? I know at least on fords you have to pull a jumper in the harness to set base timing. Otherwise you can move the dist. all you want and the computer just fights you. Give more info and I am sure someone can give you a good idea to what it is.
A 22re on 91???!?!!? Thats your problem right there! Those things are ment to run 500K miles on 87 or anything with at least some gas in it. I didnt know a 22re could ping lol
Total advance is 5 or something I cannot remember (I'll check when I get home) but I know I retarded it a few degrees, and when I did it I used a jumper like the book says. I didn't build the motor but the guy before me says he ported the head, which I'm not sure if he did or not. I ran it a while with out a thermostat so could that possibly have messed up the O2 sensor because it ran too rich? heres a pic of the dist, it has the vaccum advance on it but for my year (89) they didn't use them and theres no where for the hoses to go so I capped them (I think someone before me put the wrong dist on). Hmmmm I think the 02 sensor is part of the problem as well as the distributer...

You may have too much carbon on the pistons along with the wrong distributor.
Decarbon engine and install correct distributor, and give it a try.
It's all i the dist. EFI motors do the advance with the computer, hence the wire bypass to time it. That one has a mechanical advance in it. So add the 24 deg or so of mech adv to what the computer is doing and you probibly have in the nieghborhood of 50 deg adv. Ping city, no premium well solve this. Hopefully you haven't driven around much like this or you may have broken rings.

running without the thermostat will not cause you to run rich. In your thread you dont state that it is fuel injected. Is it fuel injected or a carb?
I have driven around alot like this, just did a compresion test and everything is fine. I will get the right dist tomorow, and let you know how the pinging goes. thanks
