    Ford 4.0 V-6: SOHC vs. OHV(pushrod)

We have a chance to buy a 4.0 SOHC for about $700 (complete with wiring harness, computer, etc.) out of a newer Ford Explorer. What are the pro/cons of the SOHC vs. the OHV(pushrod 4.0)? I did a search and only found some limited info. Thanks.

    johhnyweb,
Not sure on the exact miles, yet. The guy that I'm talking with e-mailed me "low miles". I still have to call him and get more details.

The SOHC has approx 210-220 HP vs 160HP for the OHV,stock. The newer motor screams, You can use the same trans but all else is different. We put one in a 7s truck that I sold and my friends finally got it running and they love it. With minor mods you can expect 250HP, spend some $$ and you can expect 400HP+. I think Rosslers Orbit truck has a built 4.0SOHC and he has huge HP #'s.

im pretty sure rosselers truck is a ohv motor. but yes it does scream. i have been thinking of swapping out my old tierd ohv motor in my race truck for a lower milege sohc motor. i have a 2003 ranger with the sohc motor and i have been happy with the power in it. it rev's alot higher then the old race truck ohv motor does. i also like the ability to tune it a little more for some extra hp.reliabilty wise i would bet the old ohv motor would win as it has less moving parts, mainly timing chains!!

what would have to be done to the sohc to get 350+hp, i'm assuming heads and cam along with full boltons. but who makes those parts for the sohc 4.0.

Team Orbit is using the SOHC. Cory Weyer has done so much work to the motor that FORD actually ended up using camshaft design in the new Mustang 4.0 v-6. Team Orbits engine is INSANE! I talked in depth to Mike Ruane about it at Laughlin and WOW is the word to use when describing this engine. Redline is like 9k and the powerband is about 3k rpms. Has about 550 HP I was told.

the sohc does seem to have a tendency to blow up, though.
