    I need information..help!

    Hey everyone,
I created an account today, however I cannot post a new thread so I am using my boyfriends. Anyway, I am writing a research paper about off-road racing in my college english class. I could really use your help with any information or websites that are about the sport. I need five basic things about off-road racing from a spectators point of view.
    Thanks in advance

Did you get your five basic things, btw? Here's what comes to mind:
    1) Dezert: most of the interesting bits of the race take place in pretty isolated areas... and desert isn't just sand.
    2) Dust: if it hasn't rained, you'll be sneezing brown snot for days/hours post race. Except for Primm, if you're on the lakebed. Then it takes forever.
    3) Waiting: Sometimes it's forever between vehicles.
    4) Participating: I'll never get a chance to touch an F1 car. I've helped various desert race teams/drivers I've never met before w/ everything from pulling 'em out of a stuck, to rewiring their ignition, to fueling, to changing tires, to... well, the list could go on for a while!
    5) Road trips and chilling outdoors w/ my friends: OK, occaionally spending umpteen hours on I-5 or I-80 or Mex 1 can be madenning (Lovelock to Winnamucca on the way to Wendover for a BORE race always takes forever...), but listening to Coyotes in Eastern Nevada or beach camping w/ my friends & fam on an empty beach in Baja? Epic.

dunno if this is the sort of stuff you need,

    Re: I need information..help!

    1) use spf-30 or higher, 'cause skin cancer sucks
    2) never stand on the outside of a turn if you value your life
    3) dust is a part of racing, don't fear the dirt, wear it as a "badge of honor"
    4) ANYTHING can be broken if you drive hard enough. Just ask Robby Gordon
    5) the difference between the "real world" and the desert: You breakdown on the street in any city, you are on your own; if you break down in the desert on a race weekend, the first vehicle to come along will help you, for free.

    Re: I need information..help!

What sort of information are you looking for? Are you looking for history on the sport, experiences, people, vehicles, something else, or all of the above? Don't be afraid to call up the big names of the sport and ask them for information. I wrote an article about Gregg Till (co-driver for Robby Gordon) for a college journalism class last semester, and Robby himself was more than happy to take all the time I needed to do an over-the-phone interview as part of the research for my article. Getting the numbers is easy- just ask people on this forum and I'm sure someone can help you out. The hard part is talking to a complete stranger, but don't worry- even RG is just another human being (albeit an incredibly fast one), and despite his reputation as a jerk in some people's eyes, I found him, and virtually every person in this sport to be both helpful and pleasant when I've come to them with questions or in need of help. Let us know what you're looking for, and we'll do our best!
Whether it's in behind the wheel, in the saddle, or in everyday life, never forget that every second counts.

    Re: I need information..help!

Facts ? From a Spectators point of view? Well....

*You sure have to go a long way to race!

*This dust is really bad here !

*You sure carry a lot of spare parts !!

    * All those lights must make it real easy to drive at night !

*I don't understand how you get so tired, you just sit there !!

I'm sure that's not what you wanted, but it was fun anyway.....Now, what is it you really want ?? We are here to help (sometimes) !!

    Re: I need information..help!

Top 5 questions I have been asked by a spectator.

    1. There is only one guy driving but it takes all of you to keep the car going? (8 of us standing around at the time)

    2. You have radios, cell phones, satalite phones and helicopters and sometimes you still can't reach eachother?

    3. Do the drivers get to stop to use the bathroom or how does that work?

    4. So.....Why don't they make special tires so you don't need so many spares?

    5. You guys really bust your a**'s, do you make pretty good money racing?

These are real questions I have been asked at races.

    Answers.
#1. Yes the car needs fuel aprox every 130 miles. Tires get shreaded, parts break due to the car being pushed to it's mechanical end.
#2. Communication get better all the time but there is no telling what can happen over hundreds of miles of desert. Valleys, mountains, no power in race car. It does happen.
#3. No official bathroom stops. We have cathaters (sp?) and a well planned pre race diets. (hopefully!)
#4. The tires we use are specially designed for our purpose but there are far more jagged rocks than technilogical advances in rubber and kevelar.
#5. No we don't do this for money. We are a strange breed. We call it fun.

    Re: I need information..help!

Thanks everyone for all of your responses. I was thrown head first into anything off-road, just knowing that trucks are expensive, and you go fast. I will definatly call up some names and see if I can get some information out of them...After a ton of research I was finally able to get some basic things about different places you race, safety, costs, and the differences between all the trucks and cars ( I think I might need a pocket guide or something for a while ) anyway...Thanks again
