Toyota Driveline From The Engine Back
Ok this is gunna be a long one try and stay awake. lol.
Toyota Hilux 2002 Deisel Pickup (dont worry about any of that)
At the moment it puts out about 90 hp and 250 torque and is used primarily for towing and hauling.
I am looking to turn this truck into a race truck and am just about to order all the long travel suspension and everything.
However i am wondering if there is anything i can do to improve the speed of my truck (acceleration more than top end speed). I have been looking into different tire sizes and gear final gear rations and different option differentials and my mind is in a whirl.
From what i can see the best option for me (low hp high torque) is to run large tires 33 i would guess with a very small (numeric) final gear ratio and a spool type differential.
If thats wrong please inform me or if you need more info please post.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Toyota Driveline From The Engine Back
run a 5 speed manual trans with a heavier flywheel for more torque off the line. gear it low. i dont know what kind of axle you have but i wouldnt try and gear an 8" axle any lower that 4.88. the pinion is just to small at that point. a ford 9" is great insurance and piece of mind and will let you gear super low. i run a 5.67 gear with a spool in my 9" with 35" tires and i have actually thought of going a bit lower.
i run a moderatly built carb'd 2.4L just as an fyi.

Re: Toyota Driveline From The Engine Back
If you're going to stick with 33" tires, I'd suggest running something narrow like BFG's 33x10.5 AT or MT and 4.88's in your stock Toyota axles.

Re: Toyota Driveline From The Engine Back
33's are about the limit for Toyota axles and drivetrain.
Full floater axles are good if you can find them (IIRC many of the mid-east hilux's had them)
4.88 - 5.29 - even 5.71 are okay IF you set them up correctly
What is your current set up
IFS or solid front axle, Gear ratio?, turbo?

Matt, diesel engine = lots of torque.
Tall gears to make the engine work (low redline), but not so tall that acceleration suffers too much.
Turbo?

My opinon is worth what you paid me for it.

Re: Toyota Driveline From The Engine Back
First if its diesel you are not going to want to run the same gear ratios like us with gas engines are. the turbo is definately going to be a giant help in power and accel. if you are running a 33 you would probly be able to get away with a 4.10-3.73 gear. if you try to put a 4.88 lor lower gear in it you will be pegged on the gov before you hit 60mph most likely. The diesel most likely already has a heavier flywheel than we can get for our gas engines already stock.
