    Fun in Mexico

I thought I'd share some of the fun we had last weekend in Mex. Our ride was for two days and we went from Santo Tomas to San Quintin and back. I had been working on my rhino every night until about 11:30 to get it done in time to go and finished wiring it at 11:30 on Friday night. We headed to Mex on Saterday morning about 4:30am. Here is my story and some pics.

The ride started out great. We left Santo Tomas before all the bikes and everything felt great. It was running awesome even though it was about 108 when we left. I was running in alot of dust trying to catch my friend so I could give him a little bump. We stopped after about 20 min so we could get the camera out. My friend went on ahead so we didn't have to run in the dust. We got the camera out to start filming and with no dust we're able to run pretty fast. We got to the coast and hit the marine layer and it got pretty wet so it was hard to see and I had to wipe my goggles every minute or so. We caught up to the other rhino and then we both stopped to let the bikes catch up.

After about 10 bikes went by we took off again. We passed a few bikes and then when we caught about the sixth bike my co rider gave him a little blast from the air horn. The guy heard the horn and after he saw who it was he got on the gas and roosted the crap out of us. Golf ball size rocks were hitting us. There was no way I was going to let him get away after that. We caught him again and I layed on the horn as I took him on the inside of a turn. I am pretty sure it scared him because we never saw him after that. A little ways down the road we came to the first town and the bikes gased up. We let more bikes go by so we would have someone to catch.

We were off again going wide open now that I got a feel for how it handled. About 4 miles out of town we were on a big sweeping right hand turn going wide open when my left front wheel jumped up in the air and passed me. This was not good! We slid on the rocks down a hill across a gulley and up the other side. I had no brakes and no steering for the whole 90 plus feet that we slid. Luckly we did not go end over end. After getting stopped my left wheel rolled up next to me. Climbing out it looked like the spindle broke, but what happened was the nut on the steering tie rod came off which turned the wheel and broke the spindle. I knew I could not get a truck and trailer to where we where at so I pulled the shock off and duct taped the a-arms up. We got some tie-downs and compressed the shock on the right rear to help get the front end off the ground. After doing that we loaded up the tools and drove it back to the last town. It was a long 4 miles back and there was some down hills that were pretty fun with only the parking brake and one wheel steer. After getting to the town we waited for some riders that were behind us to see if we could get a chase truck to trailer us out. We waited about an hour and a half and no one showed up. We knew we needed to drive it out so we strapped back in and took off toward the Hwy.

We got to the Hwy with no problems but stopped to check the steering on the right side just in case. No problems so we took off on the Hwy towards Santo Tomas to get the truck and trailer so we could meet everyone down in San Quintin. It was funny to see peoples faces as we passed them on three wheels! We passed about 5 or 6 cars on the Hwy and did not get passed once. We got to the truck and I drove it on the trailer and then we were off to meet everyone.

Over all it was a very fun trip and I found something else I need to fix but thats the reason I took it down there. I am glad I didn't pay an entry fee and have this happen. The in-car video that my friend took is awesome and I will post it as soon as I get it from him. Fun stuff!

Check out the pic with me looking at my broken rhino. The hill in the back ground is where the wheel came off and we slid to where it is in the pic. The pics with it on three wheels is how we drove it up Hwy 1 back to the trailer in Santo Tomas. We were passing cars like that!

that rhino looks cool! sounds like a fun time, bummer about the break, but good thing it wasnt under race conditions and you didnt spend $$ on an entry fee...
When a man knows how to live dangerously, he is not afraid to die. When he is not afraid to die, he is, strangely, free to live.

With that mentality though, I guess we could also make 2 TT classes for those guys that just can't keep up with the faster TTs. Oh wait.... This is racing. - Dan Vance

They had a fishing tournament going on while we were there but we didn't go fishing.

I hope the bike riders that got passed by the "rhino" had to buy the beers later! How embarrassing.

I followed you the last 1/2 mile into Erindera, I was trying to figure out what the heck it was from behind. I was the group of rhinos that pulled into the gas station (shed) behind you. If I had known it was you I would had introduced myself. Sorry you didnt quite make it. We had seven rhinos, all made it there and back with no problems and this is the second time we made the trip. I have to say, being a bike guy, these things sure are a blast, even with the family on board.
