Making a single phase TIG work on 3 phase
I have a Miller Syncrowave 250 (non-digital) that I have sitting in a friends shop ready to weld but I believe his shop runs on 3 phase electricity. Instead of the standard 220v 3-prong plug, his shop uses requires a plug with 4 prongs to plug the machine in with. 3 slotted and 1 U-shaped vs. the standard 2 slotted and 1 U-shapped the single phase most commonly uses. I believe this makes it 3 phase, correct?
I know there is a way to change the machine over to run on 3 phase, can anyone tell me how to do that or maybe give me a procedure and/or pictures to use?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Making a single phase TIG work on 3 phase
if you have 3phase you have single phase. you just use one less wire. it could also be 480volt power or 208v or 240v. u have to take a panel of of the welder and set it up for the correct voltage.its easy their should be a pice that tells you you just move the u shape jumper to the right spot. u will need to wire up a new plug or wire it in the elic panel with no plug to (the breaker). you could also use the same type of plug u would just only use 3 wires. hook the green wire to the u shaped prong and the white and black wire to any of the other prongs.and it should work.
if the welder is 3 phase (4 wires) the order of the wires would have to be just right.
as far as i know only newer welder inverter types can be single or 3 phase.

LOL, yeah Paul I got rid of that thing for something newer and more practical, and boy are those understatements! I'll try to give you a call tomarrow, or if I get busy I'll atleast send you a PM. It's passed my bedtime so I'm off right now.
Yeah Shrek, the landlord is always hassling me so he can just throw even more vehicles in there... He has this weird obsession with Jeep's that I'll never understand, LOL.

Eric...
If you're talking about Matt's shop (DMS's Jeepspeed playground), it has single phase power (unless they did some serious upgrading after I moved out of it)
From what I remember it only has a 60 amp Main breaker. I had my single phase, Digital Miller 250 Syncrowave in there.
What you have to watch out for in that shop is welding at high amps. I used to do some aluminum welding for Chippy, across the way, and the f'ing 60 amp breaker would pop just about every time. (of course I was welding some pretty thick pieces)
I know that my Miller will pull 98 amps at full capacity so just watch what thickness of material you are going to weld. I'm sure about 99% of what you'll be doing is going to be fine.
If you want, give me a call and I will come down to the shop and help you hook up the welder.

There is a good chance that welder is single phase. What plug it has may mean nothing at all. It usually says what phase it is right on the front face or you can check the spec plate.
If it's 3-phase look for another welder.

Thanks Paul, the welder is just ready to go, I guess I just need to change the plug. I'm not good at aluminum yet so I'm not worried about it. I will let you know if I need help.
Fabricator- Thanks, I already know the machine is single phase I just wanted to be sure that the electrical in the shop is also.
