plumbing new fuel cell
I recently removed my stock tank on my 79 f150 w/ a stock 351m motor. I'm at the point where I need to buy the parts to plumb the fuel cell to the motor. I've been looking at aftermarket fuel pumps but it appears to me I have to buy a regulator too? My current plan is to run -8 AN socketless hose from the cell to a inline fuel filter w/ -8 AN fittings. From the fuel filter I'll run -8 An socketless hose to the stock fuel pump on the motor. If I go with an electric fuel pump what brand should I go with for my motor application? can I get away without using a regulator? will the carb need to be retuned if I install a electric pump?
Regarding the fuel cell vent, I've read online the the vent needs to be run in a circle around the cell for it to be race legal, can I get clarification on this? The vent on my cell is a -8 an fitting, do I need to run -8an line or can I down size this? What are poeple using for filters at the end of there -8 an vent lines?

Re: plumbing new fuel cell
I would run at least -8 on everything (depending on hp). From the tank to a pre-filter, then to the pump, then to a post-filter, then to the regulator, then to the motor. From the regulator use a -6 to the tank. Aeromotive/Holley/Magnafuel is just a few to name. The vent should be routed that if the vehicle happens to land on either side or its roof, there is always a higher point in the vent line to prevent spillage. I would say that yes you can down size, but dont know if the rules say different. At the end of it, just use one of those cheap clear inline fuel filters.

I would not bother with an electric pump unless you have a specific reason (like you run it out of fuel all the time). Mechanical pumps are very reliable and less electrical junk to deal with and be a drain when your charging system is going south. Probably easy to keep a hard line for the longest distance in the frame. If you want to quick fill the cell like in a race then a really large vent is a must. We run a large Fram cannister filter just off the cell with never a problem. We have never seen a need for a vent filter if you run the long required tube all the way around the cell, dirts not getting in there much.

The filter Jav uses on the end of his large ID vent hose is one of those PVC filters GM used to put in the air filter cans on V8's. It's not 100%, but it cuts down the dirt a little more.

Re: plumbing new fuel cell
I have a 66 Ford F250 and plumbed my fuel system with a Holly blue pump, regulator, and two filters. I haven’t ever had a problem and it's been running that way for ten years. Holly pumps are reasonable priced and are rebuildable. Buy the Blue pump and not the red. Just run a regulator and adjust for your application;ie, 5-7 psi for the street. Try buying from Summit or Jegs. They have the best prices. I even plumbed my whole Baja with parts from Summit Racing.
