I'm not sure what *all* they use but, some are far worse than others, i.e. the Felony Films knotheads.

    Re: New Offroad Mag

I think what everyone has to remember is just this: When you go out into the desert to play ( and it DOSN"T Matter how old you are) Be an Ambassdor For Desert ECOLOGY. Clean up your Camp. Be Carful of others around you. Be Care of the wildlife. PLANTS included. And If a Ranger Ask you to do Something Do it and be Respectful. If everyone did that there wouldnt be a problem. Becuse you care for the DESERT dosnt mean your a tree hugger. It means you keep your playground Nice.. Whats Really funny is you never see the center for Boilogical diversity Having a Desert Clean up.

    Re: New Offroad Mag

Danny Cau (former SCORE president) told me the 1st thing he gets hit with, is a 8x10 photo of an off-road race-car kicking up dirt, rocks, etc. It has the (unfortunate) connotation of "tearing up the desert". I call this the "Curse of Off-Road", it has the impression of not treading lightly.
[ Note" mountain-bikers are also feeling the heat, they're access is getting restricted or banned. They might be another group to unite with. ]

"Without deviation from the norm [ change, rebellion ], there can be no progress [ evolution ]"
    -- Frank Zappa

We come across as radicals & extremists. (pushing the limits, which is in the "right" in terms of evolution). It's like "Down with the Establishment" from the 60's, hippies ("offroaders") VS power-tripping fools ("bureacracy"). The young rebels back then were fighting against old-fashioned conservatives, & wanting drastic change. It would be a good historical cast-study to analyze, to see how they succeeded/failed. It would suggest a good toolkit for strategy/tactics for our own "struggle".

Funny thing, the yuppie conservatives embrace the concept of the SUV (wannabee outdoorsman), but prostitutes it into a urban-assault-vehicle (grocery getter, etc). Most vehicle sales are trucks & SUVs, so logically off-roading should be hailed & supported for the $$ making market-share. But it doesn't.

"Too many desert freaks, whether cyclists or truck drivers, leave their junk lying around where they dropped it, beer cans, aluminum foil, bottles, the whole undegradable lot, where even a simple tire track ruins the esthetics of this austere, previously wild desert world. "You end up pushing farther and farther into the boonies," McQueen observes, "trying to escape from other people and their noise and their crap, but then they see your tracks and they follow you. It's the problem that confronts all of us in a jam-packed world. Who are we running away from? Answer: us. Its crazy, but what's the solution?" Dirt riders are discouraged from much of the desert area of California by new laws enacted as a result of the current wave of ecological awareness, but a number of motorcycle parks have been established, mainly around Los Angeles, to give bike people an outlet . This is only a stopgap solution, but McQueen approves of it, for the moment. "

What's interesting is the above was written in 1971, practically at the time offroad racing got started in the late 60's. The same issues were being fought back then.

    Re: New Offroad Mag

Everything everyone is saying about desert enthusiasts battle with land closures is all very well and true, but the fact of the matter is you are preaching to the choir. Telling us, the responsible off-roaders, that you are responsible does little to help our plight. Instead of spending time telling us how responsible you are and how much of a victim you are of our oppressive government, tell the key people who have say in what fed. land gets close to OHV use, i.e. congressmen and senators. For that is the beauty of living in a democracy even if it is controled by "power tripping fools," our word can be heard in gov. It might not always influence gov., but at least we can be heard. So with that said let gov. hear YOU, or if YOU personally are unwilling to take action to let our gov. know how YOU feel, quit whining to other OHV users about how terrible of a situation we are in.
