Rice Rockets doomed!

Well, as some of you may know I have been a reserve deputy sheriff with San Bernardino County for almost 20 years now. I'm currenty assigned as a pilot with the Aviation division. Every 3 months I have to attend a mandatory 8 hour use of force qualification course and legislative update seminar. At the last one I attended on saturday I was almost a sleep when something caught my eye..... A new state law has been amended to stop people from modifying their exhaust system to make more noise. I believe it was intended to target the lowered rice rocket Honda's and Toyota's and their modified loud exhaust systems. ( off roaders might not be immune to this also......)

It is as follows:

27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor
vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted
by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance
with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits
established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with
Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an
exhaust system so modified.

In a nut shell, you can't modify the stock exhaust system where it emits a noise level higher than what comes with the stock make and model vehicle.

Dave,

Could you please post: Section 27150, Article 2.5 and Section 27200. I would like to know the exacts as my truck emits just a tad bit more noise then stock. I guess it is time to get a horn since I won't be able to get peoples attention by revin' the motor..

i think there's a certain decibel level that's standard limit...i know those huge 6 inch ashcan exhausts are really loud...ugh, i cringe just thinking of the sound.

As we were told the simple modification of the system to generate more noise was a violation. There is no mention of decibel levels.

Will I find the info in the vehical code book? I am not arguing with you but what you have posted does not say what level of sound is not acceptable. Where can I find the article and other sections that were refrenced, that is where the details are.

The A.M.A magizine has had articles about noice recently. Certain countys/states are planing on banning any aftermarket motorcycle exhaust regardless of noise loud or quiet. A quiet Harley?

Good. We need to start impunding those obnoxious imports. I cant stand those things. Every time I see one I try to get in front and give em a brake check so they go under my bumper. I dont understand the point of modyfying a low budget grocery getter to be so loud. I think the full race 600 Hp ones are cool, but the stock imports with a nasty ass exhaust and some stickers is repulsive and even worse is the kids driving think they are badasses.

Unfortunately, this law/ordinace is not singular in action.

Forget about such nice upgrades as:

4" Diesel Exhaust Systems.
Any Cat-Back system for gas.

That is true Pat, but who is really gonna get pulled over for exhaust:
A guy with a nice truck and a clean exhaust or a kid with nasty ass exhaust?

Although they would both be violating the ordinance, cops seem to have some leniancy towards the nicer things.

I dont see how they could make it illegal when say a Flowmaster is legal already so it kinda contridicts itself. Last I knew there was a certain level that it had to be below.
