    Picks for Cyprus

So the race is tommarrow (Cyprus). What are your picks. I just watched the preview on speed chanel. I am hoping for Ford to make a comeback. Those silver bullets have been tough. I will go with Sainz and Mcrae.

My pick with Mcrae and the Fords was right on. Mcrae over one of those darn silver bullets by 7 sec., but 3 of the top 4 are Fords.

    Re: Picks for Cyprus

Final results are 3 silvers in the top 4, and 3rd place went to a subaru. Mcrae was leading until today, and somehow dropped way off. Have to watch the tube tonight and see what happened.

    Re: Picks for Cyprus

    Sunday, 21 April 2002

Peugeot driver Marcus Grönholm has scored his second victory in this
year's World Rally Championship on the fifth round, the Cyprus Rally,
which finished in Limassol this afternoon. After an exciting final
day's action, the Finn and navigator Timo Rautiainen led home team
mates Richard Burns and Robert Reid to secure Peugeot's fourth
straight one-two finish. Overnight leaders Colin McRae and Nicky
Grist suffered a disastrous final day, though - they rolled three
times in two separate accidents and had to fight back in the last
stage to secure even a single point.

Like yesterday, the spring Cyprus weather played games with the world's
top rally stars, and the closing loop of stages was hit by occasional
heavy rain showers. Burns's runners-up spot was only secured in the
last test, after he overhauled four-times world champion Tommi Mäkinen.
It was a result that moved him further clear of the Finn in the world
championship standings but he still lies in third, behind his asphalt
    specialist team-mate Gilles Panizzi.

    Re: Picks for Cyprus

"Ok, at this point as long is the damn winner isn't silver I'll be happy! "

The "silvers" will (more than likely) be world champ this year. They have 2 world champs (2000, 2001), a tarmac guru, and an extra Finn at their disposal (Rovanpera is a lot better than most people think). The only real challenge to total domination will be Citroen, and they're only gonna show up at selected events.

Tommi Makinen is the Michael Schumacher of Rally, but after 4 (straight) world titles, he seems to be thinking about retirement. He's still probably the best driver out there, but I don't think he wants to win as much as some of the others. Solberg is very good, but way too inconsistant. This is why Subaru will not be a serious contender for the 2002 championship.

McRae and Sainz have too drive their Fords way too hard to keep up with the rest. Therefore, they will continue to destroy the cars and have mixed results.

None of the other teams have the talent (Engineering, driving, or otherwise) to keep up with the "silvers".

Congratulations Peugeot on your 2002 World Championship!

    Happy motoring, Tim

    Re: Picks for Cyprus

With only two more tarmac rallies left this season I would have to say that things will be going the way of either Subaru or Ford. I would be very surprised if the Peugeot’s hold up over the next three rallies. Not to mention Panizzi is only a factor on tarmac and while a very good driver, Rovanpera is no Sainz, McRae, or Makinen. Gronholm is very consistent but not great in the rough stuff. Now there is still Burns. He is learning the car more every race, he is the one who scares me. JMO
