ford crate/rebuilt motor

so it looks like my '77 bronco with a stock 302 is going to need a motor (low compression and blows lots of white smoke). so i don't want to drop a ton on it and i am looking for something mild, maybe 300 horsepower range. any suggestions on where to go or look??? there is a place on ebay, tuff dawg engines out of arizona that looks reasonable but i don't know anything about them, has anyone heard of them???

to get a decent motor built you might want to look at dssracing.com, coasthigh.com, or f-p-s.com. I don't exactly know the price range of their motors, but I expect their reasonable. Another possibility would be getting a ford motorsports shortblock and getting a performance package from TFS or Edelbrock and building the top half yourself.

i'm interested in this info also. lots of chevy builders and crate engines, but how about a good 351w?? crate motor, stroker? anyone have a good recomendation?

i found a place that will do a totally stock rebuild for $1000
another place will do a 280hp long block, pan to intake, for just over $2000
i have a friend at coast hi performance and he is getting me a price but i know they are out of my league.

Talk to your buddy at Coast. Coast offers some really inexpensive parts (in-house Probe line) and should be able to put together a nice motor combo for pretty cheap. A 302 stroked to 347 will easily get you the 300hp you want without much fuss.

FWIW I'm not a fan of the 347's in anything that has to last. I figure Ford didn't spend the money to design, test, and build the 351W block if there wasn't a good reason to do so. If they could've reliably gotten ~350 inches out of the 289/302 block (from a mfg's warranty perspective) they would have done so.
300HP from a late 5.0 engine (w/ or w/o the SEFI) with some good heads shouldn't be too hard to do. B4 I spent any money on stroker parts I'd spend it on a good set of heads.

A little expensive but it's got a 12 month / 12,000 mile warranty. On a low mileage and more importantly low RPM vehicle the 347 will provide lots of oomph for the bucks spent. Or you can go mild and build a 331.
